I bought this item as I am planning to visit a friend in Macedonia and I wanted to prepare well for going. This guide tells you so much about the land that it feels as if you've already been there. Not such a surprise maybe when you know that the author has lived in the country herself for half a decade and has travelled arround quite a bit too. The first half deals with all the typical things you can expect in this country, dealing with the people, the climate, money, customs, language, people groups, transport, prices, accomodation, using the Internet, opening times and how to behave as a guest in a way that will be appreciated etc. and the second half of the book gives a lot of information about different areas and many towns, all over the ... A predominantly vivid and lucid exploration which is a delight to read. Transports the reader into the ancient world of the Macedonian lakes, and at many points during the book, it is as if Deliso has managed to stop time and create a film-like frozen scene where grandeur takes over. There was a high contrast change between the first fast-paced half, and the family vacation half that followed, but both were equally enjoyable and to me it was the perfect demonstration to the diversity of the lakes. The book has certainly made me long nostalgically for the vacations I've spent at the many places Deliso visits, and I've made a promise to myself to do a tour of the lakes during my next visit to Macedonia.

A well-written and authoritative account which manages to give an even-handed account of the complexities and challenges that were faced by Macedonia as recently as 2001. Also useful for an understanding of the history of the country and the region. I recommend it.

This book requires updating since the dispute between Greece and FYR Macedonia has moved on from Shea's rather biased outlook. I wish historical books would avoid taking sides and just present the facts to the reader so that he/she may form an opinion. John Shea forces and cojoles the reader into a particular viewpoint by presenting only one side of the argument and ignoring the other side. For example, he interviews a sample of slavic-seaking Macedonians and takes it for granted that there "accounts" are true without referance to actual historical records and without corroboration from governmental archives from both sides of the argument. He also deems it unneccessary to interview slavic-speakers who do not consider themselves "macedonians" ... Read More:

The author has done a good job in collecting information from all districts of the country and the hints were mostly accurate and interesting. Unfortunately the section on the background of the country and its people is based on purely nationalistic views that only some slavomacedonians would identify with: it plays down the importance of the Albanian culture and people plus it offers a confusing history chart that mixes elements of Bulgarian and Greek history in its discourse. All in all it's a good guidebook with sections on History that are far from balanced.

Bedrock for many a travellers itinerary. I had so many of these I set up a website to get rid of them. I found this book useful in that it covers, in some depth, all areas you're likely to visit. You will find yourself referring to it for basic information.
