Not an easy book to review. This is a 'scholarly' account - Curtius' "History of Alexander" is one of the sources for the great general's life, written some time after his death, written by a Roman, and written for a Roman market which venerated the military genius of Alexander and appreciated his skills in prefiguring the Roman methods of diplomacy ... i.e., proffering the hand of friendship, but carrying a very sharp sword.

Anyone with an academic interest in the era will be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of this work and will hardly require a populist review. However, anyone looking for an accessible, readable account and analysis of Alexander's career and impact on Europe and Asia will not find it here. So, while the ... Read More:

I bought this item as I am planning to visit a friend in Macedonia and I wanted to prepare well for going. This guide tells you so much about the land that it feels as if you've already been there. Not such a surprise maybe when you know that the author has lived in the country herself for half a decade and has travelled arround quite a bit too. The first half deals with all the typical things you can expect in this country, dealing with the people, the climate, money, customs, language, people groups, transport, prices, accomodation, using the Internet, opening times and how to behave as a guest in a way that will be appreciated etc. and the second half of the book gives a lot of information about different areas and many towns, all over the country. ... 6.The Generalship of Alexander the Great (Wordsworth Military Library) by: J.F.C. Fuller

This is an interesting account of Alexander's campaigns (the authorhimself was a solider so the emphasis is very much on the militaryside).
However, the writing is quite dated nowadays and the way that the book isdivided into different sections dealing with different aspects ofAlexander's generalship is logical but not a page-burner.
Having said that, it is an interesting and detailed account and wasobviously written before the advent of expensive TV history programmes andcomputer simulations of battlegrounds and troop movements.
I have just started the author's work on Julius Caesar and I am finding itequally hard-going, although still enjoyable.

I was really looking forward to this book as there have been hundreds of titles on Alexander the Great, but no basic non-scholarly introduction to the Macedonian infantryman.
Waldemar Heckel is an expert on the Hellenistic World and a long time researcher on the Macedonian military. He brings his deep knowledge of the subject to this title, and is assisted by Ryan Jones, a Classical historian, experimental archaeologist and reenactor.

This title gives you a step by step guide to world of Alexander's warriors. It begins by setting the scene of the time, giving a brief overview of the political and military situation of Alexander's time, along with a chronological timeline.
Heckel then covers the average life of the Macedonian soldier, ... Read More:

This book is a little gem. It is the transcription of a series of lessons, each of which covers an aspect of Greek Warfare from the Heroic Age to the Ellenistic Kingdoms. Although short, the book is exhaustive and definitely worth buying for both the military enthusiast and the general reader. The only criticism I might make is that there are no illustrations; this makes it difficult to visualize the chapter on naval warfare. For this reson, the book should be read together with the "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Warfare" by Warry

Search : Memnon

Scott Oden was born in 1967 in Columbus, Indiana, and raised in rural North Alabama where he still lives. He has had a fascination with Egypt and the ancient world since boyhood. He studied history and English at the University of Alabama before pursuing a number of jobs. His first novel was the acclaimed Men of Bronze.

Memnon of Rhodes was born in 375 BC and rose from humble beginning to become one of the most feared and respected men in the known world. Many kings bowed before him and those that didn't feared what he might do. He was both a soldier and a sailor. He was a great general and his grasp of strategy was second to none.

To Darius III of Persian he was the one man capable of defending Asia Minor from the rising threat ... Read More:
