Abba made some great tunes. OK, I'm not a gibbering idiot fan that goes around in Benni Ulvaeus dungerees but the group created the truly definitive 'pop' sound for me. Fashions...well that's different-although Agnetha in that cat suit mini skirt remains a constant source of comfort on long November evenings! But why is there an absolute sea of these bargain-bin retrospectives conducted by utter non-entities? I mean even 'Through the keyhole' would reject these people on the grounds of obscurity, and that isn't meant to be ironic! Abba-'The critical review', Abba-'The ultimate review', Abba-'Another way to rehash the same stuff but with Radio Berkshire Gold DJs venting their opinion-all at £12.99 a throw. By all accounts there are reams of ... Read More:

57.Number Ones by: Abba

Music : Number Ones
These thirty-one ABBA's songs represent the best and you probably won't tire of them. It is amazing that four Swedes (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as writers and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog as the main singers) could take such simple English clichés and turn them into pop music magic. Despite sometimes maddeningly simple lyrics, the song arrangements were unnervingly catchy and the multi-level layered compositions are fascinating. The keyboards and synthesizers were used in some of the more ingenious ways during the seventies to produce that unmistakable ABBA sound. The energy and nearly anthemic enthusiasm emanating from each song marked them all as instant classics, no matter how jaded or cynical the listener. It is doubtful ... Read More:

I remember getting this album as a Christmas present in 1980, and I played it to death. I just love everything about it. Every song is of the best quality and as a whole I consider it to be Abba's finest pop collection.
I always found the title track a little bit naff when it was first released as a single, but it has grown on me greatly over the years.
'The Winner Takes It All' is in my opinion the best Abba song ever. Agnetha breaks your heart with her vocal on this chart topping clasic tearjerker. The lyrics are so personal to her situation , you have to wonder how she was ever able to sing them.
'On And On And On' sees Abba back in dance mode, but it's so much more than a dance track. It has also aged incredibly well. You have ... Read More:

This album is a much more consistent affair than Abba's first album 'Ring Ring'. The title track will be known by everyone as the 1974 Eurovision winner, but there are several other excellent Abba compositions in this collection. 'Honey Honey' was a US hit and 'Hasta Manana' and 'Dance (Whilst The Music Still Goes On)could easily have become Abba classics had they been released as singles in the UK. 'Gonna Sing You My Love Song' is a beautiful ballad sung by Frida whilst 'My Mama Said' provides an early glimpse of the disco sound that would evolve in 1979 on their album 'Voulez Vous'. A much better collection than 'Ring Ring', but the best was yet to come.
