I've been a fan of Aimee Mann since "Whatever", and along with Lost In Space, it's still one of my favourite Mann albums. This one has taken time to grow on me. All the trademarks are there, the beautiful and warm alto, the witty world-weary obervations, lovely productions.

I would say that my favourite tracks here are Freeway, very radio friendly, the moving honesty of 31 Today, Phoenix - "you love me like a dollar bill, you roll me up and trade me in", and It's Over, a beautiful lilting 3/4 string-laiden ballad. The lyrics are often beguiling to the point where it's not always clear whether these are mere stories, or whether the lyrics are drawn from personal experience, I suspect possibly both. There are a handful of songs which ... Read More:

Looking through my CD collection i realised that less than 5% of them were by female artists, i didn't really know why but i never really seemed to be drawn to them, however, with this album aimee mann made me sit up and listen, it is a great collection of songs by a serial artist, the songs flow easily from one to the next, the song-writing is superb infusing a great deal of meaning into every song and the vocals are well performed creating a brilliant album. Bachelor No. 2 is an album that i keep coming back to and one in which i am always impressed, favourite tracks include Red Vines, Save Me and The fall Of The World's Own Optimist. For an artist that seems to be overlooked in the musical world this album is stunning and will no doubt be enjoyed by ... Read More:

I'm a big fan of Aimee Mann and have all her albums but I would have to say that this is one to avoid. Unexpectedly, and unlike the rest of her albums, The Forgotten Arm is tragically short of really memorable hooks or tunes - it really just passes you by pleasantly enough without registering at all. I had it in my walkman for a couple of weeks yet still couldn't remember what most of the songs sounded like at the end of that period. I'd certainly challenge the five-star reviewers of this album to look at the tracklisting and then sing the chorus of each song... I'm sure they would find it a desperate struggle, I know I couldn't do it. By all means get hold of any of Aimee's other albums (especially the outstanding Bachelor No.2) but you really won't ... Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's secret service'. ... Read More:

i bought this album on tape when it first came out after seeing her perform on jools holland, this is a great debut album by Aimee and every track is superb! okay she didn't have great chart success unlike her followers but back then she was the first of the new generation of woman rockers, like Alannis Morissette,Joan Osbourne,Narina Pallot, and Sara Bareilles that followed. i heard Sara Bareilles single "love song" on the radio when it first came out and immediately thought it was Aimee they sound so alike but Sara's style is more uptempo & poppy! this prompted me to dish the tape album i had and buy the album on cd,it still sounds good and fresh 15 years on.so if you like any of these artists of recent then you won't go far wrong with aimee's debut album! stand out ... I've got all of Aimee Mann's albums to date, and this is the best of the lot in my opinion. It's lyrically dark dealing with addictions and depression, extremely melodic, lovely sparse production and instrumentation, Aimee's voice reaching new lows on tracks like "Invisible Ink" and "High on Sunday 51", these are all songs you can sing along to, I love "Humpty Dumpty", "The Moth", and there's a fantastic "da ba da" section on "Real Bad News". My weakest track here is "Pavlov's Bell", a heavy-ish, bland guitar laiden rocker. Mann's strengths are in the soft ballads, when the subtle acoustic instrumentations really highlight her vocal quality. If you like Aimee Mann, you must hear this.

Aimee Mann, loved and lauded for her sharp, original songwriting, doing cover versions? Surely not?! Well, it works, thanks to Aimee's superbly understated vocal and some truly innovative, yet retro, arrangements. Highlights are the poignant original composition "Calling On Mary" which sees the individual heartache under the seasonal tinsel, "Have Yourself..." which refreshes a tired classic using a simple but highly effective keyboard riff, and "White Christmas" which is nicely de-Binged by a mournful bass drum throughout. Mann's aim was to recreate the magic of vintage Christmas LPs by Sinatra, Matt Monro etc. but she's actually made this all her own.

One star docked only for the very short running time (33 mins) and possibility that it won't sound great on the beach in July! ... Read More:

I'm With Stupid is oddly hailed as Aimee Mann's best album, but I can't agree. It has its fair share of brilliance, such as That's Just What You Are and Choice in the Matter, but it's nowhere near as good as Whatever or Bachelor No.2: for starters, the disastrous Ray should have been left off, and there's filler in the form of Superball (a metaphor for emotional volatility that doesn't quite hit the spot - it's ahrd to hear the words "I'm a superball! Bounce me once and I'll ricochet around the room!" without wanting to laugh). This said, the other tracks are as close to perfection as you're likely to get, and there's at least two all-time classics on this album plus a top-quality hidden track, so 4 stars it is.

I am an Aimee Mann fan and have five of her albums. I bought this recently and was very pleased that I did as she appears to be excellent live. I have to say she is one of the most talented singer-songwriters I have ever encountered and extremely underrated. She seems to relax as the live performance goes on and has a great rapport with the audience. "4th of July", "Save Me", "Invisible Ink" are some of the best songs I've ever heard - absolute poetry. Her band is very talented as well. At the risk of sounding like a prude (which I'm not!) one little niggle persisted with me as I listened - she came out with the odd unnecessary expletive and it really grated on me. It just didn't seem to fit with the image. This aside, I would love to see her live and I highly recommend all of her albums - this is up there ... Read More:

This SACD version is noticeably better then the CD version of Bachelor no. 2, Amiee's vocal and piano playing come across in a more natural and detailed way than on CD.

You need a SACD player to benefit from this, but a CD layer is present as well which makes transferring it to a MP3 player a much simpler prospect. That said, the CD layer is still superior to the original CD thanks to Mobile Fidelity's remastering, but probably not worth the extra outlay on it's own.
