This is a wonderful recording of what must rank as one of the most awesome pieces of music ever written. Personally I can listen to this 3 times in a row, and will have goose pimples all the way through, for 3 hours solid, every time. This music is just so jaw-droppingly, humongously, enormously, epically BIG!!! If this music was a painting it would cover a canvas the size of a football field. If this music was a sculpture it would dwarf the Eifel tower. It is truly incomprehensible. Luckily you don't have to comprehend, it's enough to fasten your seat belt, turn up the volume, and prepare to take leave of planet humdrum for an unforgettable ride.

One remark on this particular recording: some reviewers (e.g. Milan) think this recording ... Read More:

This is the fifth recording I have of Monteverdi's Vespers, which I have also heard frequently in performance. I bought it because of the reviews I read here. I could not finish it and have given it away. It would take a book to explain what is wrong with it. Briefly I found it coarse, unsubtle and vulgar. The subtle rhythms are thrown away by the crude interpretation, the tempi and dynamic changes are distracting and the whole effect contrived. Head and shoulders above every performance I have heard is Andy Parrott's, though this is flawed. Personally I shall stick to reading the score.

I had in my collection Richard Hickox's recording of this alongside Solti's rendition. I was then told that, apparently allegedly etc, that Sir John Eliot thought his recording of Verdi's Requiem was his finest recording to date, so I had to buy it.

It is true - the performance of the Requiem and the four Sacred pieces are masterful. The Dies Irae, that most famous moment, is typical Gardiner - punchy and driven with no let up - 'day of wrath and doom impending' indeed. However, in the more gentle moments, such as the opening and later in the Libera me, Gardiner weaves a beautiful serenity into the performance.

The test for me with this piece is the 'Domine, libera, Domine' at the very end with the almost-Spanishlike dance where the fugues of 'cum ... Read More:

Most of what I would have wanted to write as my review in response to the previous one by Ralph Moore I have said in the comments below the previous review. Apart from his view on translation in general, I am in agreement with his review.
I am glad that put my response in the 'comment sub-text' because it generated an interesting correspondence on the subject of opera in translation and some other matters.

Whilst this recording is, indeed, exciting it provides a very different view of Monteverdi's work. This idea that grand music has to be augmented by huge numbers of singers is frustrating and not particularly historically informed. Monteverdi was used to one-a-part madrigalian singing and probably had similar forces at his discretion in Venice.

Parrott is good, Herreweghe is better - a modern version of the Parrott!

I bought this CD because I had lent my last copy of Haydn masses to a friend and she didn't give it back. Since I first heard Haydn's masses, I feel I need them in my life more than any other music. I am not a fan of overblown Beethoven, even of his 9th Symphony. Haydn, Schubert and Mozart are more my cup of tea and I feel like Haydn's late masses are almost symphonies with added voices. Both of these masses reach deeper into the musical material than did my last recording. The sense of timing is spot on, the voices perfectly expressive and in tune and the playing is full of vigour. I will play this CD many times. Aren't I lucky?
