Laterally, 'Supermodified' is a mood piece, sound-scapes etc, but as a concept, I'm afraid it's off the rails. It doesn't draw the line, it's in over it's head - I get a disturbing feeling that it's something to be scared of.
The road Amon Tobin is walking, isn't gonna lead anywhere good.
'Supermodified' is extremely corrupt. Full of decadent ideas and whims all crammed up against each other like lemmings. It conjures up areas of mystery and sultry dynamics, readily striking maddening chords in reviewers, like yours truly, who vociferously decry 'rock' in all it's insidious forms, but hypocritically embrace it's very fundamentals at every opportunity.
'Supermodified' has as it's granddaddy, 23 Skidoo's epic 'Seven Songs' from ... Read More:

I admired the soundtrack for Splinter cell: Chaos theory throughout all of the hours I played it, every track has the perfect mood for the mission to which it is assigned.

From the clunky/rustic guitar and haunting strings of the opener, to the eccentric jazzy style of 'Kokubo Sosho stealth', the highly consistent sound genius has taken traditional styles (such as Flamenco for 'Bank') and combined them with his own, un-named genre.

Amon Tobin doesn't play the instruments himself, however, he always knows what he wants from the session musicians, and always gets it.

After finishing SC:CT (the first time round), I recognised 'Ruthless' being played on Top Gear, it was clear then that it had been released on CD. ... Read More:

Unlike his other work, this is less accessible and more avant garde than you might expect. Amon Tobin uses a much wider range of samples and effects than in his earlier work (hence the reference to the foley room) but somehow it's still trademark Tobin: lots of big beats, heavy bass and effects-laden soundscapes. As a hardcore fan, I was initially doubtful about it but, after a few listens (and you will listen a few times, it's that intriguing!) it still pushes the right buttons for me. Not on a par with my favourite Tobin album (Bricolage), but he's bravely trying to push the boundaries and, for the fact that he has done something genuinely different and (just) pulled it off, I salute him. "Foley Room" is not recommended for newcomers though - if ... Read More:

This is one of the most fascinating, absorbing and amazing records ever made in my opinion. Perhaps I'll comment more fully in due course, but for now, I'll just say that if you're considering buying this, go ahead! I can't imagine anyone who's interested in electronic music being anything other than delighted with their purchase!

The great thing about this album is that most existing fans will love it, yet it offers new directions and angles compared with previous Amon Tobin material. The delicacy and sparsity of some of the samples and instruments reminds me a little of DJ Krush, whilst the incredible percussion and programming is there in all its usual stunning style and imagination. I put this CD on in my car and it sounded like I had a new sound system, the production is so amazing. Whilst I understand the other reviewers' thoughts on the more experimental tracks, after just a few spins I like everything on the CD. It somehow makes you feel like you're living life in a movie, with the music listening to you as much as the other way round: eerie. Tobin's tunes don't just evoke ... Read More:

First step with this album is to ignore ALL references you may have ever heard to 'post-drum and bass' guff that you have heard this labelled as. Its yet ANOTHER needless pigeonhole, fast breakbeast don't necessarily equate to drum and bass. Amon has more to do with fast jazz, hip hop and soundtracky orchestral arrangements than drum and bass.

Amon recently has been signed up to provide the soundtrack to the next spy thriller game in the Splinter Cell series, no doubt this album was slap bang at the top of his CV as far as getting that job goes. It echoes! Deep rumbling sound effects ominously punctuate the album, the entire thing sounding like it is being broadcast from one huge, dark cave. Check the way that Amon weaves in some choice samples ... Read More:

How often do you find an album in which there are no 'filler' tracks? Answer: very rarely. This is one of those albums.
As someone else said in another review, ignore all of the myths you've heard about drum 'n bass being mindless and for junkies. Amon Tobin is much cleverer than that, and as a result, the album contains a mix of everything. Drum 'n bass with menacing 'melody' lines, jazz which could have come straight out of a 30's jazz club had it not had a heavy, but catchy beat laid down on top of it, and even a bit of bossa nova and other brazilian music styles, hailing back to Tobin's birthplace.
Its getting on for 9 years since this was released, but i'd still listen to it rather than the trash that gets put in the charts today. Another bit ... Read More:
