I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

There's certainly nothing overblown about Andrew Manze's style of playing. The best known of these sonatas by Handel is the Sonata in D Opus 1 No 13 which opens the recording. To some ears, Manze's tone might be too cool and spare - in the opening measures particularly. To my mind, the sound he creates is perfectly suited to the demands of these small-scale, occasional chamber pieces of the early C18.

As Manze's illuminating essay that accompanies the CD makes clear, only five of the eight complete sonatas on the disc are now thought to be authentically Handel. The others were probably passed off as Handel by unscrupulous publishing houses cashing in on a big name. It might be seen, therefore, as a wonderful opportunity to play ... Read More:

From the first notes of the first concerto, it is easy to tell that the playing is going to sparkle. Manze and the Academy of Ancient music are on top form, enthusing the music with warm and virtuosity. The result is immensely satisfying to listen to.

There are so many good bits... but the Concerto for oboe in D minor, Op.9/2: Adagio (Track 5) is sublime. I've heard lots of recordings of this on the radio, but this is the one that stands out and makes the CD worth buying for just this 5min 30 sec! It's the smoothest, least affected version. The oboist, Frank de Bruine, manages to make the notes soar effortlessly without faltering - the result is pure relaxation to listen to.

The rest of the concertos are a delight ... Read More:

This CD is remarkable. Four pieces are Tavener at his usual best, with harmonious apparently simple flowing sounds, melodies isn't quite right, as his music is more than melody - more like gentle fluid harmony.

I have to admit that I have a different aspect here, and this is that I love Sappho nearly as much as I love Tavener. So imagine my disappointment when my favourite composer set my favourite poet and the result is, to my ear, discordant and screechy. I fully admit that I probably don't understand what Tavener is getting at, and I will keep listening until either I understand or come to the conclusion that I will never understand, but such initial disappointment was painful.

The rest of the music on this ... Read More:

I was surprised to be somewhat disappointed by this CD, having become a rather avid fan of Manze's playing! On this CD I find his virtuoso playing far too extravagant and frenzied in many places, almost czarda-like - other parts are hauntingly beautiful and show great sensitivity. I do love the harpsichord accompaniments, which really come into their own in this recording and compliment the violin, whereas so often the harpsichord can be overshadowed by other instruments. I wonder if I would have enjoyed one of the other two recordings of these sonatas better?

Another triumph for Andrew Manze, who does more than justice to this collection of 12 Fantasias for solo violin by Telemann! He uses his mastery and virtuosity to brilliant effect in his interpretation of these works. He is then ably "aided and abetted" by Caroline Balding in the performance of the Gulliver Suite for two violins.

I wasn't familiar with any other recordings of the Eroica, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I find this to be a very interesting performance but so far a demanding listen. It certainly sounds fresher and livelier than old recordings of the Fifth and Sixth which I listen to regularly.

I have no problems with the quality of the recording, it is fine. I suspect that when I hear other recordings of this they will not replace this, my first encounter.

Andrew Manze does it again! This wonderful recording features the first recorded performance of the previously lost Missa Christi Resurgentis. Apparently the piece has lain dormant for the last three hundred years and was only rediscovered recently in a Czech monestary.

The piece takes a departure from the typical Easter mass in that Biber inserts beautiful solo interludes between the liturgical choral parts of the mass. Manze deftly balances the piece's choral climaxes with these solo transitions giving the entire piece a feeling of integrity that might have been lacking in a less comprehensive treatment of the piece.

Manze's interpretation is heart-felt and brisk. No sleepy, by-the-numbers baroque here! The actual recording is warm ... Read More:
