I was very disappointed to find that Virgin/Veritas have not included the very full and interesting 68 page booklet, containing the libretto, essays and notes, which came with the original EMI publication.

As a fervent atheist, I was move greatly by the sheer depth of devotion reflected in this music. A conversation of a profound nature is started across the short chasm of four and a half centuries.
I was exposed to later choral music as a schoolboy (particularly Byrd- Tallis' protege) but never felt so overwelmed.
Other recordings may be technically superior, but this is great value.

This double CD charts the evolution of polychoral music that would have been performed in the churches of Venice during the late 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. The first CD is dedicated to the music of Giovanni Gabrieli, a Venetian composer and leading practitioner of the polychoral style, who became an organist at the Basilica of San Marco in 1585 until his death in 1612. Some of his works, including Canzoni et Sonate and Reliquiae sacrorum, were published posthumously in 1615. More music by Gabrieli features on the second CD, together with works by his contemporaries, Monteverdi and Grandi, and also includes works by Castello, Legrenzi, Lotti and Vivaldi. The music is sensitively performed by the Taverner Consort, choir and players. This album ... Read More:

In my lifetime the number of performers deemed necessary to perform Bach's major choral works has shrunk from a fairly mammoth scale to almost nothing. Now, while I accept the authenticists' arguments about contemporary performing practice, I am still left with a niggling feeling that the sheer scale and grandeur of Bach's inspiration and conception has been short-changed by the rigorous, somewhat puritanical application of these theories. I am not pleading for a return to the serried ranks of the Huddersfield Choral Society in their heyday - those sort of numbers certainly do muddy the waters of Bach's thrilling counterpoint. Nevertheless, at the back of my mind lies a strong suspicion that at the back of Bach's mind when he was writing these works lay ... Read More:

I bought this recording basically due to the rave review the person wrote on this web page. I have to be fair not listened to all the recording but I am shocked how the last review gave this CD 5 stars.
The notes which come with the CD do not have words. This would be fine if the diction was precise but I can barely understand a single word so far. And this shouldn't be the case even if most of the movements are choral.
The 'silly fuss' about the borrowing issue which the last review spoke about is in fact one of the most interesting and fruitful aspects of Handel's music. The way Handel adapted pieces of work can often show his genius clearly. It is also of importance to the period of Handel we are talking about since in certain periods Handel borrowed ... Read More:

This, the revised Magnificat of 1733, with transverse flutes instead of recorders and in D major (from Eb), shows Bach at his most rapturous, inventive and lyrical (even if the actual lyrics were someone else's!). With music like this, no wonder the Christian faith was so strong for so long.

From the off, Andrew Parrott sets an urgent pace. Although none of the early numbers is indecently over-hasty, none of them gives much pause for thought either, and we have the faint suspicion, initially at least, that Parrott must have had an important connection to make just after the recording. But if the first track, 'Magnificat', seems a bit too jaunty, put it down to the subtle, sub-conscious conditioning you received from those over-sedate recordings of the 60s ... Read More:

These are the sacred works of Handel from his first Italian stay, and include, Nisi Dominus, Dixit Dominus, Laudate Pueri, the Salve Regina and the Carmelite works. With the exception of minor imperfections in the Latin pronounciation of several of the singers, this is a wonderful recording. It is constructed so that the works of Handel are fitted into a Vesper Service with antiphonies and the Handel works in the position of the psalm. Therefore it is conceived as a Vesper Service overall. I think that for several of the individual works included here, particularly Laudate Pueri, and Dixit Dominus there are better recordings e.g. for Laudate Pueri, Nisi Dominus (see: Harmonia Mundi Musique d'abord collection) and for Dixit Dominus (see: Balthasar-Neuman Deutsche Harmonia ... Music : The Best Classical Album of the Millennium...Ever!
I have listened to quite a few compilations such as this one but never really felt like exploring the world of classical music much further. This album opened my ears to the delights of classical music by including pieces that are recognisable by someone like me who knows little about classical music. For example, I did not know that the dramatic opening music in 2001 - A Space Odyssey was from Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss or that the background music in the British Airways TV commercial was the Flower Duet from the opera Lakme.

Since listening to this compilation, I have bought several classical music CDs and am enjoying them immensely. For example, I had actually seen Swan Lake and heard the music many years ago but never felt tempted to listen to it again. But after ... Read More:
