THE phenominal Lee Gibson has magic in her voice and swing in her soul.

She is, I have no hesitation in saying, one of the finest British jazz vocalists I have ever heard.

Listen to her sultry 'No More Blues' and her beautifully-put-together version of the Latin-American favourite 'Dindi'. Having heard them, I'll eat my hat if you don't rush out to buy this album --- or perhaps her other superstar CD offering, 'The Nearness of You'

Lee Gibson is that magic mixture of swing, soul and pure, creative songability. She is in every sense a stunner who shoves most of her British competition well into the gloomy sidelines.

Believe me, even if it's an understatement, SHE IS JUST FANTASTIC! Hear her for yourself...

Latimer is without question, one of the world's greatest pianists. His jazz/free improvised playing is jaw-droppingly brilliant, as are his compositions, but when you consider he is responsible for the only (and will no doubt remain the only one EVER) LIVE CD of the excruciatingly difficult Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano, his genius is unquestionable. Recently picked up by Warner Classics (home of Barenboim, Grimaud, Lugansky, Schiff, et.al.,) their first release with him is, what it transpires also to be another first, the Reger Bach and Telemann variations and fugues. WHY THE HELL aren't these CDs available here in North America ??? Anyways, see for yourselves with this one. The guy should be at Carnegie, the Village Vanguard, Symphony Hall and the ... Read More:

Jacqui Dankworth has learnt a lot from her illustrious parents. From her father, John, she has learnt which notes to sing, and more importantly, which notes NOT to sing. From her mother, Cleo, she has learnt the balance of hot and cool singing ....sometimes pure, usually...well, more interesting. The album is, perhaps, a little odd. Its a mixture of jazz and A.E.Housman, who's stiff upper lip quivers from time to time. It's difficult to imagine that Dankworth's Houseman is the man so admired by J. Enoch Powell, but his emotionality is brought to life by a mixture of careful, yet passionate singing and sensitive, but gritty, playing. Tony William's Spotlite label is to be thanked for bringing such a carefully produced and well-balanced cd to the ... Read More:

If you are not familiar with the Matt Wates sextet then listen up.Matt is an alto sax man heavily influenced by Cannonball Adderley with his hard swinging, lyrical style. The band won't break any new ground from a creative point of view but this c.d is pure listening pleasure. All compositions are by Matt himself and he shows origionality and variety with some catchy swinging melodies.Standout tracks are "funny that" with a killer flute solo from Andy Panayi,"between the lines" where you can close your eyes and imagine yourself on that train with it's gently swinging melody and "lucky socks" where there are strong solos from all band memebers.
If you like your jazz straight ahead and swinging then "between" the lines is the c.d for you.If you hav'nt ... Read More:
