Recent years, particularly when it comes to Folk, has seen the re-issuing of a number of albums that were either lost in the shuffle of bigger marketing machines dedicated to other genres. From Karen Dalton to the Incredible String Band, slowly but surely, CD editions have finally done justice to works that despite their substance and audacious creativity, remained confined to the mad search of old vinyl copies often at exorbitant prices. This apparent settling of old Folk accounts have given us CD access to unarguable beauties such as Vashti Bunyan' and Linda Perhacs' thirty-plus albums. Uber Mixmaster Mr Votel pulls it off again in this the third installment of his legendary mix albums. Another 75 minutes of obscure cross continental psych, prog, funk, etc. And another 75 minutes of 'guess that tune'. Lovely stuff! Edit: Finders Keepers have now started releasing free podcasts, with the first being available in Jul 08. Fans of Votel's mix albums will mostly certainly enjoy them. The podcasts can be downloaded from the "B-Music MP3 Store" (see the Finders Keepers website for the link).

How someone could have the gaul to take this classic stuff remix it with silly effects and put it on the market is beyond me. I've never heard such a travesty, it has no artistic merits and doesn't even warrant as a 'compilation' The whole point of a song is to hear the complete thing, not a silly thirty second snippet or have it fade into something else. Don't get me wrong the Vertigo out put was in a class of its own, but this is like taking say, a painting by constable and putting a space ship in the sky or changing the sky to blue to grey. What right had Andy Votel to manipulate these great songs. Arrogance or not? This reminds me of those awful Tony Prince tapes that interspersed sixties hits with incessant drum beats to make them more trendy. This ... Read More:

Following on from his own three mix-albums ('Music to Watch Girls Cry', 'Songs in the Key of Death' and 'One Nation Under a Grave') and the hairy funk of 'Vertigo Mixed', Finders Keepers' crate digger Andy Votel has been commissioned by Far Out Recordings for this Brazilian mix-album. Comprising of tracks from Brazil's Som Livre and RGE labels, Votel has dug deep inside the crates and found some classic 60's & 70's Brazilian psych, acid and fuzzy funk and mixed it together in is own inimitable style. And I thought I knew a lot of obscure tracks!! Only a lifetime devoted to the unusual and strange on vinyl could enable Mr Votel to compile this mix album. There's no track listing so perhaps these tracks are destined to remain anonymous - but I'd still love to know what some of them are. If you liked DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's Brainfreeze or David Holmes's Free Association mix then you'll love this - but be sure to bring your sense of humour. There is some funk and soul - but also French yeye, garage sounding rockiness, Indian flavours, movie sountracks, folk and even something that sounds like Krautrock - but don't be put off! Andy Votel is startlingly young, considering his wide range of accomplishments: he is already a DJ, producer, remixer, talented musician and label head, with Badly Drawn Boy on his roster. With that sort of accomplishment it wasn't surprising that, as a prelude to two full-length albums, he eventually released a EP. "Styles of the Unexpected" is not terribly unexpected to fans of Votel's remix work. It's a sweet, melodious mix of jazz, post-rock, electronica and little sonic flourishes. It opens on a suitably pleasant note with the slow-motion percussion and xylophone being overlaid on a bed of soft synth. It's a nice way to start things out.
