This is the most wonderfully refreshing version of Mozart's masterpiece. Renee Jacobs says in his notes he aims for the opposite of smooth, legato Mozart, so Mozart emerges as the subservsive composer he really was. Figaro was considered dangerously subversive in its day and here is a truly wonderful version, brilliantly conducted with the woodwinds more forward and pungent than usual. The singing is simply a pleasure from beginning to end with no weak links in the cast. The fortepiano playing alone is simply worth buying the set for. All in all, the best version I've ever heard of Mozart's timeless masterpiece. Wonderfully refreshing!
