Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century.

To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right.

However, this album has a far larger significance, in the way that Sargeant Pepper did. It changed everything and set off ripples that are still reverberating ... Read More:

The easy-to-love, soft and swinging sound of bossa nova swept the world in the 1960s, and much of its fame rested with the supremely talented composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Mr Jobim recorded generously throughout his career, but this 70s collection with marvellous singer Elis Regina is something rather special. Elis and Tom create a darker, more fatalistic bossa record than we are used to, with strong, deep-blue emotions expressed via Elis' searing voice and some wonderfully varied instrumentation, including a dramatic string section that sounds positively mournful when paired with Ms Regina's limpid vocals.

The songs themselves are some of Jobim's most wonderful. The classic "Inutil Paisagem" benefits from hauting solo piano accompaniment; ... Read More:

It was a gift. When I fist listened to it, I could no beleave in what I was listening. Brazilian music played on a, or accompained by a cello. Yo-Yo MA achieves the hard task to put together the cello with one of the most rich music in the planet. I neve get tired to listen to it. You should try it to.

I first heard this album as an LP in my Dad's record collection, and I've been unable to get the tunes out my head ever since. I don't know much about jazz, and only have a bit of modern stuff in my collection, but this album is so mellow and melting, it's unbelievable. Think of a gin and tonic or a glass of soft red at the end of a long hard day, the fire roaring in a cosy room, good company, and this is the missing piece. Fantastically relaxing....

This has to be one of my all time favourite albums.

The material covered on this album contains some lesser known Antonio Carlos Jobim gems and the few better known ones handled with a different delivery by the Morlenbaums and Sakamoto. The other earlier Quarteto Jobim Morelenbaum album is much faster and not so polished as this. They have had time to perfect the style on this second outing.

The first track gives us a taste of what is to come. Ryuichi Sakamoto plays the piano with precision and delicacy whilst Jaques Morelenbaum's cello gently weeps into the microphone giving the feeling of a happy sadness.... If there is such a thing. Paula Morelenbaums vocals add that magic touch as though she is singing the song just for you.
