Astrud Gilberto made a name for herself when she fortuitously sang on the 1964 US Top 5 smash "The Girl From Ipanema". This association with jazz and bossa nova godfathers brought her a lot of flak from critics quick to dismiss her "artless singing style" and "limited vocal range". However, to the music listeners who succumbed to her vocal charms - and I sure am one of them - the most important aspect of Astrud Gilberto's singing was her ability to get the most out of everything song she performed. As a bonus, her music greatly benefitted from sumptuous Brazilian cum U. S. orchestrations. This has to be Stan Getz at his best. You would be hard-pressed to hear the Tenor Saxophone play this smoothly and with such effortless feeling anywhere else. I can't think of another Jazz Sax player who could have made this album. It is a classic. The lyrical input from Astrud Gilberto and sensuous arrangements by Joau make this album something special. A must-have for all Jazz sax fans.

By the greatest of hazards, I came across Mr W. Nayland's review of the CD titled "Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour." In my opinion, this album is, arguably, the definite overview of the Verve recordings from Ms Astrud Gilbero, contrary to what Mr W. Nayland might say. And, no, Mr W. Nayland, this album is NOT titled "The Best Of Astrud Gilberto" either. This CD is a twenty song strong collection of Ms Astrud Gilberto's classic blend of pop, samba and jazz recordings for the Verve label. It includes really the cream of her Verve recordings, spanning the period 1963-1969 (plus one track recorded with James Last in 1986). This is one of my favourite CD's ever bought as it is loaded with gem after gem of brazilian bossa nova delights. Works perfectly in the summer or even winter when you need some chillout or could even be used as background music when enjoying a fine meal with some drinks. One of the best chillout albums ever!

Stan Getz never better than when playing Bossa Nova! This is basically the lot including several different versions of the same tune. Pricey, and 4 instead of 3 CD's which it could have been, purists will still want the full collection. Others should seek out the excellent long one CD set on Verve, Jazz Masters 53 which has much of the best from his Bossa Nova years. Whichever, the CD remasters from LP are awesome and I just play these over and over though occasionally I tire of Astrud's plaintive wail, where it occurs - though not her cheeky telephone song, (not on Jazz Masters but here and elsewhere).

Whether re-dressed as Ultralounge, or re-mixed into trance-dance by anonymous DJs for the 'Verve Re-mixed' series, Astrud is always there. And even away from the clubs and the overpriced cappuccino bars, she still sounds good! 'The Genius of Astrud Gilberto' is a comprehensive overview of her Verve output, and essentially it's a 2-CD extension of the 'Finest Hour' compilation released barely two years ago. A glance at the track listing will reveal few if any surprises to Astrud buffs: there's the obligatory 'Girl from Ipanema', 'Corcovado' and 'Insensatez', and one can't help thinking that a golden opportunity has been missed.
