Well i think this album is absolutely brilliant. It's easily within my top 3 favourite albums as there isnt a single bad song on the album! Alot of the songs start slowly and build up to somehting and they do it brilliantly! My favourites change all the time, but at the moment, it has to be "yesterday threw everthhing at me" and the superb "wires" buy now! It's an album which will be played for years to come!

Listen to this album many times over. It's got all the truly Athlete moments scattered on its disperate tracks, and several surprises in-between. My highlight is Airport Disco: It's beautiful and commands respect; listen with your headphones on and the volume turned up. The Outsiders was used for the science bit in CSI:NY.

Having followed Athlete from thier start, I perhaps have a more biast view on this album than thier second, thinking it far superior. If you liked Tourist, hopefully you will love this album. This album shows Athlete trying to find themselves, and the result is an album full of completely different songs, all of which are pulled of spectacularly. Sadly I found thier second album (Tourist), though much better produced, much less diverse, they took the 'sound' from the few songs that did well from Vehicles and Animals and repeated it over and over to make quite a dull album, compared to the frivolous and different sounds of the songs shown in Vehicles and Animals. Hopefully Athletes 3rd album will move back to the more experimental ... Read More:

For those mellow evenings when you're maybe feeling a little down, or a little knackered - this is the ideal calmer. Laid-back, alt-country that isn't quite morose but certainly not upbeat - in some ways almost jazz-like. The album is worth buying if only for the majestic and melodic Tender To The Blues. Wonderful.

I listened to the song for the first time on Top of the Pops, and it never really affected me. I listened to it again a few weeks later, and this time it seemed to me to be a nice slow, catchy indie tune. I then read the lyrics and immediately the song just had so much more meaning and emotion. I've been through a similar thing with my baby sister being quite weak, and this song is just so perfect.

Athlete follow their debut "Vehicles and Animals" with a more matured, heartfelt album. With the exception of "Modern Mafia", which was admittedly written as an on-tour singalong foot-stomper, each trach is performed with an air of sincerity, passion, reflection and grace. Most of this album was penned while the lads were on tour and clearly missing their loved ones. "Half Light" and "Tourist" capture the mood perfectly, whilst "24 hours", Street Map" and "Yesterday threw everything at me" pour out a melancholy reflection of mistakes, crossed words and those forks we all have in the paths of our lives. The DVD contains beautifully shot videos (including the emotionally charged "wires"), but its the live performances that show Athlete in their greatest glory. ... Read More:

What a great album this is! James Yorkston's songs are evocative and beautiful. The songs are slow-burning though, they seep into your consciousness quietly and gently without you noticing. "Heron" is a perfect example, and almost epitomises the whole album. Starting quietly, it gradually builds into a glorious wave of accordion, before gently resolving. The album on the whole is a quiet one, though "Banjo Number 1" and "Shipwreckers" are rather more rousing. Yorkston has also included a couple of traditional numbers, "Edward" and "The Snow It Melts The Soonest". However, the songs fit together as a coherent whole through the use of banjo, fiddle, accordion and guitar. The overall feel of the album is warm and occasionally melancholic, but always lovely.
