You really can't lose either way if you buy this box set. For those used to the EMI/DECCA recordings of the 60s it is a real treat to hear this new take on some old classics, and for collectors coming to this music for the first time, these discs immediately bring the wit and invention of this great partnership to life.

The musicianship of the soloists and orchestra are first rate on every disc [there are 5 of them]. You may consider the D'Oyly Carte recordings to be definitive because they were mainly recorded after a lengthy run of stage performances, but when you have Royal Opera House soloists being accompanied by a top class orchestra and chorus, you really can't go far wrong. Listen to Richard Suart as the Major General ... Read More:

Joyful recording of a very under-rated opera, with crystal clear acoustics. The Philharmonia Orchestra is outstanding and the CD is worth buying just to listen to the overture. If I am being very picky then I have to say that the singing is a little uneven in parts; for my tastes Ninetta sometimes too dramatic; Giannetto too down beat. But nevertheless a 2-disc set I am very glad to own.

One of the very best G&S recordings ever made, in my view. The YEOMAN is essentially a record of WNO's stage version of the opera, which finally brought Sullivan's music to the stage of the Royal Opera House. Felicity Palmer's rendition of "When Our Gallant Norman Foes" is an object lesson in how to sing this material. The late, lamented Donald Adams brings authority and humour to Sergeant Meryll, and in Richard Suart there is a credible Jack Point (the D'Oyly Carte's John Reed can't be bettered as Bunthorne in PATIENCE, but the pathos of Point is sadly beyond his range). The rest of the WNO cast is similarly excellent, and Charles Mackerras gets top performances out of the WNO orchestra and chorus.
TRIAL BY JURY is very good indeed, although ... Read More:

If you're used to Verdi's version, it can be slightly disconcerting to have all the main male roles in "Otello" sung by tenors - but make the mental gear-change to Rossini and it all makes sense. Bruce Ford sings the title role very well, and Juan Jose Lopera is excellent as Jago. William Matteuzzi's Rodrigo strikes me as utterly wet, but that may be the character; it doesn't matter whether he's Rossini's, Verdi's, or Shakespeare's Rodrigo, he's a bit of a waste of space . . . I was particularly impressed by Elizabeth Futral's Desdemona towards the end of the opera, where she adds depth to the part.

The joy of this particular set is the appendices. Here we have the 'lieto fine' - the alternate happy ending where Otello finally buys a clue, ... Read More:

Rossini first met his first wife Isabella Colbran in 1807 when he was 15 and she was 22, and between 1815 and 1823 he composed a series of roles for her which form the core of his opere serie for the San Carlos Theatre in Naples. These arias are more commonly tackled by mezzos (most notably Marilyn Horne, Cecilia Bartoli) than sopranos (Katia Ricciarelli, Nelly Miricioiu here), but there is a considerable overlap. For example Miricioiu here sings Zelmira's 'Riedi al soglio' which also appears on Bartoli's second Rossini recital for Decca 'Rossini Heroines'.

More popular Rossini Recitals (eg. 'The spectacular voice of Marilyn Horne' conducted by Henry Lewis, Bartoli's first Decca Rossini recital conducted by Patane, Ricciarelli conducted by Ferro) ... Read More:

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS ... Read More:
