As Bat For Lashes, Natasha Khan makes the most alluring fantastical, darkly glittering folkpop you can imagine.

Well, most of the time, anyway. One of her more accessible, everyday songs is the enchanting "Prescilla," the story of a bad girl gone good. But in the single "E Prescilla," Khan reworks the original single extensively for a powerful new sound, slaps on a Springsteen cover, and finishes it off with the delightful music video.

The title song swims to the surface in a swirl of strings, autoharp and handclaps. "There's a girl who wants to stop/been thinking about having a couple of kids/comb a brush around the hair in the morning/to be needed, simply and with meaning," Khan sings softly, about a girl named Carrie who was "queen ... "When you love so long/That the thrill is gone/And your kisses at night/Are replaced with tears... Then I ask you now/what's a girl to do?"

Bat for Lashes' exquisite debut has many brilliant songs on it, but the most memorable of them has to be "What's A Girl To Do?". It's a haunting breakup song with a dark, swirling melody -- and this single contains a pair of extra songs on the end, one live and one remixed version of the title track.

Hollow kettle drums, and a rippling harpsichord set the dark mood, before Natasha Khan says wistfully, "We walked arm in arm/But I didn't feel his touch/A desire I'd first tried to hide/That tingling inside was gone." She describes how her lover asks her if she still loves him, but that her heart "grows colder ... Read More:

Well, I dont know many albums that start with a harpsichord melody that sounds so simple that it may as well have come out of one of my childhood keyboards, but still retains a certain baroqueness about it. But here we are! Bat For Lashes is essentially Nataschka Khan's band, a gifted singer/songwriter who mixes a Bjork-like individuality with unusual instrumentation and graceful songwriting. The album relies mostly on piano/keyboard/violin melodies and Khan's direct yet soft vocals.

Listening to it, there doesnt seem to be a definitive song for this band, as each of the 11 tracks on offer here sound unique. That doesnt mean they're all winners; all of the songs can be praised for individuality but some for being unmemorable. This, in turn, makes haunting ... Read More:
