I have been a big fan of Ben Folds since hearing uncle walter back in 1995, so i feel well placed to comment on this latest effort. I have never been compelled to review on amazon before but having read the other reviews here i feel someone needs to bring some sense to the argument! Firstly, those who feel this album is crass have clearly only been into ben folds since the release of songs for silverman. Had they listened to any of his other albums, they would realise that his witty, un-pc style is exactly what makes ben who he is...one of the best songwriters of our generation. Love this record. Just absolutely love it. The sheer joy and energy is enough to make me listen to it again and again. Despite it only being a trio, the music is very inventive, so that there is a lot to listen to. The songs first seem "pop-ey" and easy, but the more you listen the more they grow on you, and it becomes clear that these songs were created by musical genius (I agree with the blurb on this site where comparisons are made with Todd Rundgren). Buy it - enjoy it!

A friend lent me 'Songs for Silverman' not having heard much of him before only the odd song on radio 2. Piano based music has never been my favorite ,but I was soon hooked on the quality of playing & song writing. So much so that I bought the other 4 studio albums, Of which 'Whatever' is my favorite of a very fine bunch. Songs such as 'Brick''Fair''Missing The War' are outstanding. Buy this one first and you'll end up buying the others for sure.

It's easy to see with these reviews the ones that are written by fans - glowing 5 star reviews that, once the hype of the album has died down, and the songs aren't any longer fresh are worthy only of three stars at the most - I've done it - so two and a half years after it's release, It's time to re evaluate. In short - I still love this album. Not only is it, in my opinion the best thing Ben Folds has ever recorded, it's also probably my favourite album ever. Although I loved Ben Folds Five, as I have grown a little older, some of the earlier stuff, the more flippant, humourous songs have started to grate on me - which is why I love SFS. This was the second Ben Folds album I bought after accidentally seeing him perform live (dual-headlining with the Divine Comedy); the first being "Whatever and Ever Amen". While "The Unauthorised Biography of Reinhold Messner" is a good and balanced album, I'd say it is less loveable than the other two I now own ("Rockin' The Suburbs" and "Whatever and Ever Amen"). I'd say the tracks are much more slow growers than on the other two albums, apart from the instantly loveable "Army", which is just wonderfully bouncy and sing-a-long. Another stand-out track is "Mess"; a powerful (Divine Comedyesque in the style of "Lost Property" from "Regeneration") rambling narrative with a forward-moving backing. This is a superb album that massively surpasses all the Ben Folds Five back catalogue in my opinion. It is full of superbly catchy melodies and thoughtful, moving and amusing lyrics. 'It'll make you laugh and cry' is an over-used phrase, but it is rare to find a songwriter that is so equally at home dealing with both tragedy (e.g. Carrying Cathy) and lighthearted mockery (e.g. Rockin' The Suburbs). This is Ben's finest album, almost of all of the songs are captivating in different ways and it will not disappoint.

Folds is always good value live, and here you get a whole Symphony Orchestra thrown in into the bargain. Visually it's standard fair. There's an orchestra, a warm Australian open-air evening and shots of a relaxed crowd reclining on the grass enjoying what is an enviable night out. Ben doesn't alter his act much to accommodate the orchestra, and some of the arrangements don't quite manage the jump to a 90 musician version. But well worth having if you're a Ben Folds fan.

This is nice little DVD made up mostly of songs from his EP releases (which can now be found on the collated album supersunnyspeed...) and from his second solo album 'Songs for Silverman' and there's a couple of old Ben Folds Five tracks in here as well. The show was set up to be an intimate live gig with people requesting songs online through MySpace. This does kind of mean that there's not too much linking each song as it's not been planned but the songs fit together well and Ben goes at them with his usual high enthusiasm. The concert is not full gig-length, it's about an album's length.
