It's ok, it's just not Biffy is it? Compare this to Now the Action is on fire, and it's like listening to two completely different bands. One willing to disregard everything that society expects in a song, in the process creating brilliant music, and the other doing everything that the music industry asks of them, in the process creating something that sounds like the Foo Fighters. I like the Foo Fighters, but Biffy in their prime never sounded like them. And to be fair, this song is weak in trying to that. The lyrics are abysmal, the chorus catchy yet boring at the same time, the production way over slick, structure more conventional than Greenday. The only decent part is the middle eight. After seeing biffy live at download 05 and being pretty unimpressed i left them there,or so i thought but reading good reviews on them and hearing from a friend or two that they are a good band then i decided to bite the bullet and buy this little nugget here and im glad that i did because it is a solid album that flows like a river but jig jags over the place as well,its an unpredictable album at times and i love the unpredictability of an album at times. Biffys sound is one of post modern rock with dashing of hardcore riffs but there is also the use of poppier,kookier sounding guitar use as well,lead singer simon fallon sounds like a cross between roddy of fellow scottish rockers idlewild and jonas of metal tyrants katatonia,laid back in style i guess ... I only came across Biffy Clyro after Puzzle was released and I loved that album so much I decided to explore the preceding albums. Blackened Sky is the debut, released on a minor label back in 2002. Out of the three albums prior to Puzzle, this is the album that has most in common with Biffy's current effort. But that doesn't mean it shares the same sound entirely. It has some very tender songs on here that are certainly worth listening and Biffy should be credited for not sticking to the same tried and tested formula - the variety between songs and albums is pretty huge. I love the tender songs on here, the best being "Joy.Discovery.Invention" and "Christopher's River", which are both truly excellent tracks (the latter being especially beautiful). biffy clyros second album expands their style but doesnt quite define it as the follow up would and thats not a complaint,its praise in a way,the syles here range from indie to mathcore to some grunge to punky riffs to more poppy moments and indeed all of those styles can be found on the same track,influences here range from the blood brothers through to idlewild,some say that this album was recorded in one day,if thats true then you wouldnt know as this album is far from shoddy,in fact its a beauty. Biffy have an ear for a melody,and they know how to fuse the styles that they spin out together without sounding like a dogs dinner,thats a good talent and on their upcoming album i sense that they are set to become a big player in music,but here back in 2003 their sound was still ... There are definite reasons to get this CD, for us completists. 1) There is an exclusive edit of '27', basically the album version with a fade. 2) This is the only commercially available CD to have the radio edit of 'Toys Toys Toys' (available on the 7" and promo CD) and of 'Jaggy Snake' (available as a download). Geeky, but there you go.
