A fantastic collection of old-time music, "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow!" captures vintage fiddle music at that rare crossroads where the blues, jazz, and something that would one day be called folk were all in their infancy. For fiddle virtuosos performing between 1927 and 1935, quite simply, anything goes. Banjo Ikey Robinson's red hot "My Four Reasons" swings with humor and pizzazz, the State Street Boys' "Rustlin' Man" features the down-and-out blues vocals and fiddling of Big Bill Broonzy , and the Mississippi Sheiks' jazzy, but blues-inspired "Lazy Lazy River" musically straddles both sides of the Mason Dixon Line. For many listeners, the more esoteric tracks will stick out: Bo Chatman (a.k.a. double-entendre blues ... Read More:

This is not just another reissue of old 78's .... this is a collection of rarities put together by a man who lives and breathes shellac. The discs on this CD are all prime copies, no elecktrickery; track 21 (Original Stack O'Lee Blues) is the only copy of this disc known to exist, one disc from a label that issued only 55 records....bought in a lot for ten dollars, that someone has since offered thirty thousand dollars for....but collectors never sell, they buy discs to listen to, not trade.

And Joe Bussard is the king of collectors, been at it since his teens, knows his stuff and loves his music...proper music that is. We are lucky that he chooses to share his collection with us and others who've heard his broadcasts....

Music : Where the Blues Began: 2cd Set
This forty-track double disc is one of the best of the many Big Bill Broonzy-compilations on the market, especially considering the price, and it does a great job om summarizing Big Bill's thirty-year career.

William Lee Conley Broonzy was a huge source of inspiration to many younger bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim among them, and once you've heard him do "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Worrying You Off My Mind" and "You May Need My Help Someday", you'll know why.
Compare this CD to the earliest plantation recordings of Muddy Waters, and suddenly you have the giant of Chicago blues, the great McKinley Morganfield, looking like a Bill Broonzy-imitator. (Muddy actually recorded an entire album of Big Bill's songs, as did Memphis Slim, ... Read More:

Finally! All of Big Bill Broonzy's classic and hugely influential prewar sides gathered together, 128 sides recorded for labels like Paramount, ARC and Perfect Records.
The sound is not great, which is to be expected, but it is certainly as good as on any collection of this seminal and highly influential music, which features Big Bill as a solo performer as well as leading various small combos.

Big Bill Broonzy was one of the major links between country blues and the urban Chicago variety, and artists like Memphsi Slim and Muddy Waters recorded entire LPs of his material.
And this is certainly no second-rate compilation, in spite of the relatively low price and the cartoonish design of the box...it is a well-annotated, carefully remastered ... Read More:

Music : The Bill Broonzy Story
I consider myself fortunate in the fact that I own every single one of Big Bill Broonzy's songs which amount to quite a few. What I wanted to get more than anything else was an autobiography of him. Well with this fantastic cd box set, I don't really feel that is necessary because I think it serves my purpose. Three brilliant cds and it is great to hear Big Bill in conversation talking about his past life. Some great blues singers have had the misfortune of a deterioration in their singing over the years. Not so with Big Bill Broonzy! If anything his vocals are even better than his earlier years and the sound quality on these cds is quite magnificent. R.I.P. Big Bill Broonzy and thank you for your legacy!

This is the only Broonzy album I own, and I can't help thinking there must be better stuff out there. I had previously only heard him playing solo, and I personally think this is where he really shines. On these recordings he tends to sound a little swamped by the band format. He sounds overly conventional, and one can't help wondering how much commercial pressure there was on these recordings. I'm not saying they're bad by any means, there of listenable quality and pleasant enough, but there really is little to distinguish them from many early city blues recording, and I've heard Big Bill sound so much better
