My first encounter with Big Star was via a friend very much into 'proper' music - i.e. all played on guitars and the like, no synths (Hammond organs are OK though, as far as I can gather), preferrably from the 60s or 70s. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Beatles... nothing against any of them (at least, not Young and Dylan), but not the pivotal points of my record collection. As a fan of some distinctly non-proper music (Future Sound Of London, Aphex Twin, Orbital, to pick the first names that come into my head) I was naturally suspicious.

It took several listens, but eventually I came to at least appreciate the melodies in Big Star's music, via songs like September Gurls, Thirteen, The Ballad Of El Goodo and Way Out West. Once I bought ... Read More:

Music : Third/Sister Lovers
Hitting the mark somewhere between 'Plastic Ono Band' and Brian Wilson's abandoned 'Smile' sessions, Alex Chilton proves to his audience that he doesn't need the chart topping success of the aformentioned to reach the conclusive end of his artistic peak, such as Lennon and Wilson had reached theirs' in the midst of the groups inner struggles, incohesiveness, substance abuse, and the overall line straddling between inspiration and frustration.

In fact, Chilton's career, which really can be seen as spanning a mere three records, is almost the polar opposite of those of the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Yet, ironically, the artistic commitment is very much the same nonetheless, thus spawning some of the most groundbreaking music of its era. ... Read More:

I don't quite understand the logic of releasing a "best of" and only using two albums as the source, especially when those two albums are already on a single CD and on the same label. It actually makes a lot more sense when you put the CD in your machine, because as soon as September Gurls kicks in the world's a better place - it's like being 18 again and the summer lasts forever. If you've never heard Big Star before then it's quite possible that you'll play this CD and, quite justifiably, feel that you've discovered the best album in the world ever - it's that good. Big Star was the result of a blue eyed soul boy (Alex Chilton) getting it together with a Beatles fanatic (Chris Bell) and the upshot was two stunning albums of Memphis power ... Read More:

Story is an improvement on the previous best of- which just focused on the first two Big Star albums- but it's still a package with flaws. The order itself is deeply irritating, non-linear for no reason- we get tracks from Big Star Live (a 70s recording that is poor- Hot Thing) & a T-Rex cover (Baby Strange) from the Columbia album from the reformed BS (with members of The Posies). Two tracks are included from Chris Bell's I am the Cosmos (1978), the title track and You and Your Sister- both brilliant and both technically BS-songs...but you may as well include The Box Tops' The Letter or Soul Deep. The effect would have been more potent if it had ended on Cosmos/Sister (with maybe an old BS classic from The Posies reunion as an 'encore', eg In the Street)& let's note that you ... Read More:

It was really a big ( and great ) surprise, when I read in a magazine this Spring that Big Star had been in the studio to record a new album; now it has finally been released - the first new studio album for 30 years.

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Alex Chilton was always the key-member of Big Star, but original drummer and occasioanal singer Jody Stephens is also still there. New members are guitarist and singer Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, bass keyboards and vocals.

I was a little anxious that the album would be a big disappointment ( reunion albums often are!!), but having heard the opening track "Dony", written and sung by Chilton, on the internet, my expectations grew. This actually sounded like Big Star. "Dony" is a typical Chilton/Big Star power ... Read More:

This live album was recorded by original members Alex Chilton & Jody Stephens with The Posies' Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer (who were on the crest of a wave, follwing their seminal grunge take on Big Star- 'Frosting on the Beater'). Chilton had been lost, since releasing the dark masterpiece 'Third/Sister Lovers'- he produced The Cramps debut, did a single called 'No Sex' and appeared to have become a myth- as Roky Erikson, Gene Clark or Arthur Lee...Perhaps follwing the interest of bands like Primal Scream & Teenage Fanclub- as well as covers by This Mortal Coil- Chilton & Stephens decided to do this concert (despite original bassist Andy Hummel's abscence- left for another existence and the abyss left by Chris Bell's death...)...The impetus for this album seemed to be- ...
