this CD is really just another example of the music companies trying to fleece us the poor consumer. whilst the music of Billy Joel is superb in any format this best of is just a rehash of his Essential collection. unless you have a burning desire to own Scenes from an Italian Resteraunt and Only the Good Die young then i would seriously recommend 'The Essential Billy Joel' 36 tracks in all and 16 of them which you get on this album.

This is a masterpiece collection... and I do like the mixture of talent in lyrics and musical composition. Covers most of his best, popular hit songs, but sadly missing one of what could be considered as part of his essential past ---"Pressure", a synthesizer-driven song from 1982, about the difficulties of dealing with the stress of daily living. I haven't heard this song in years and this would have topped off this set. There are some real timepieces here. I didn't think i'd ever forget the lyrics to a few of these classics. A very underrated artist! A must-have, if you only know a couple of more recent songs, the ones from his earlier days are amongst his greatest and worth a listen or two!

As a fan of the man I was let down by this.Would have been better in DTS,or DVD audio the mix for SACD is weak to say the least.

This was Billy Joel's big commercial hit album of the eighties - his "Thriller", "Brothers In Arms" or "Born In The USA". You know, the one the people bought who owned no other albums of his and wouldn't consider buying "Glass Houses" or "52nd Street" for one minute. That said (and for that reason it has never been one of my own personal favourites) it is certainly an upbeat, immaculately-produced album that takes an interesting nineteen-eighties look at the doo-wop style of nineteen-fifties East Coast USA - guys huddling by braziers in the snowy evening singing in harmony and such romantic notions. Billy Joel is the complete artist. A wonderful vocalist, a brilliant lyricist, an exceptional musician, an absolutely astounding pianist and an incredible performer. For my review of the album itself, please check out the 2CD re-release. This review concerns the 'extras' you get if you buy the box set. So, the question is - if I already own the original album 'The Stranger', why should I buy the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Limited Edition box set? There are quite a few reasons, as well as the excellent sound quality of the original album, of course. Firstly, the box it comes in is really classy (it's about the same size as the 'My Lives' collection) and it includes two booklets. One is a reproduction of the notebook Billy used to write the lyrics for and to sequence the record and the second is large, glossy and contains some fantastic photographs as well as the written story of the making of the album. This lives in my car. It contains no surprises - all the hits are there chronologically. Including the awful Uptown Girl - sorry Bill. Listening to this collection nose to tail exhibits the variety of Joel's writing,his gift of sublime melody and his vastly underrated talent as both lyricist and singer. The fourth disk is a scissors & paste job of Q&A sessions and the discussed songs performed live. It gives an insight into Joels writing and reveals something of his charisma and talent whilst giving a nod to his influences, he's a funny guy, he is after all the entertainer. It took me quite a while to get round to buying this album and I wonder why I waited so long. I absolutely love it, so much energy. I have had the CD for some weeks now and can't stop playing it. "And So It Goes" is one of my all time favourite Billy Joel songs and a calm end to a sometimes frantic album.

Billy Joel maybe best known for his piano rock of 'My Life' to the 'do wop' of 'Uptown Girl' but underneath the commercial lining is one of the finest songwriters of the twentieth century and it is brought to you by Turnstiles. Joels fourth album, Turnstiles was not a big success but nevertheless and ,most importantly the material is beautiful. Despite there only being eight songs, the album comfortably fits into the singer/songwriter idiom of the time. It starts with 'Say Goodbye To Hollywood' an enjoyable pop tune with the ingrediants of the sax and up tempo drum kit and piano.
