Excellent CD well put together compilation of Hits - great to listen to well worth buying.

Certainly the peak of Blondie's career. 'Parallel Lines' is a nice and short album - backing up my firm belief that all the best music material comes in short packages. Every track plays like a single here, and there are four 'official' hits including two Number Ones; 'Picture This', 'Hangin' On The Telephone', 'Heart Of Glass' and 'Sunday Girl'. These included two singles that were released in a year (1978) that was the best-selling year for the 7" single in music history that went on to cause all sorts of manufacturing problems. The CD is disappointing with awful remixes of In The Flesh and Good Boys, but the DVD more than makes up for it. It's the Best Of Blondie plus 3 new tracks but without the annoying taxi driver bits, so you actually get to see the complete videos.

For some reason known only to the record company, the tracks on this compilation are not in chronological order. The album thus opens with 1979s synth-rock track Atomic and then moves back one year for the equally electronic but far more catchy Heart Of Glass, the pop and dance classic. Track 3, Sunday Girl, also comes from the excellent Parallel Lines album, whilst Call Me (theme from American Gigolo) is another electronic dance track that has not aged well because it lacks a good tune. Next comes The Tide Is High, a lilting reggae number from 1980s Autoamerican. Denis takes us back to the brilliant 1977 album Plastic Letters, whilst Dreaming and Union City Blue come from 1980s less than inspiring Eat To The Beat album that also contains Atomic. ... If the number of times I listen to it each year means anything, "The Best of Blondie" is the best greatest hits CD in my collection. Yes, the New Wave classics like "Dreaming," "Hanging on the Telephone," "One Way Or Another" and "Call Me" are here, but like with most artists the songs I really seem to enjoy are those great songs that never got a lot of air play, like "Atomic," "Sunday Girl" and my personal favorite, "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear." Yes, it would be nice to have a bit more representation from the punk stage of vocalist Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein (e.g., "I'm Not Living in the Real World"), but you do get the proto-rap hit "Rapture." What else can I say, except that pretty much everybody I know has this CD and loves it.

If PARALLEL LINES is Blondie's greatest collection of songs - snappy, clever and direct, in ideal compliance with their standing as the perfect pop group - their 1980 AUTOAMERICAN is their greatest album, one that is dignified and complete, perfect in its total unity and harmony. Ironically it is at a time when Blondie were most alienated as a group that they sound most like a band, a contradiction evoked in the record's beautiful cover art. On AUTOAMERICAN Blondie, in spirit at least, step outside New York and breathe in the vast scope and beauty of America. performance strengh in all aspects,if you have not been there or you have not seen her and the group feel the magic interpretation of the times at that era and since.one could go to the realms of fantasy about blondie,that would be false.they are the most,genuine,the best.

For all their CBGB punk and new wave credentials and their embracing of all contemporary New York culture, be it art or disco, on record Blondie were a surprisingly commercial enterprise, thanks in part to the production of Mike Chapman, and their love of sixties pop (Ellie Greenwich is a guest singer on the album). Eat To The Beat was their fourth album and yielded four hit singles: Dreaming, Union City Blue (in the UK), The Hardest Part (in the US) and Atomic. Another three (Sound-A-Sleep, Living In The Real World, Die Young Stay Pretty) were B-sides. Atomic reached number one in the UK, and Dreaming was number two.
