This is effectively a follow up to Bootleg series vol 1 - 3 (1961 - 91)
How anyone thought they could find 2 let alone 3 discs worth of recent material to compare with those glory years is beyond me. Dylan has had several peaks over the decades, but each has hit a lesser height.

Dylan's released work of the last ten years, while good, does not match the mid seventies era (Planet Waves / Blood on the Tracks / Desire), let alone the mid sixties classics. These outtakes reflect that drop in quality. There is nothing here to match "Blind Willie McTell" or "Last thoughts on Woody Guthrie" that appeared on the vol 1-3 set.

Anyway, the bad stuff first:
There is far too much filler here. The two (two!) versions ... Read More:

In the beginning the way into Dylan was via Peter Paul & Mary, the Turtles, the Byrds and Johnny Cash.
And commercially electric Dylan was just right.
This CD is just a sampler and introduction to the Art of Dylan. If you want more you get the original albums on CD.All but one have been on catalog since CDs began.
My favorite Dylan song is Can you please crawl out your window.
Thus this double CD would only be of interest if there was a booklet with it and its by no means the only one of its kind as the most recent-titled DYLAN and in 3 different editions -comes with a picture book.
Today's Dylan collector needs plenty of money and plenty of room

Theme Time Radio Hour is one of the most original and enlightening music programmes on the air. It's brilliantly presented by Bob Dylan who plays an eclectic mix of often obscure records all linked by a theme. Dylan's knowledge of American popular music is immense and each programme is peppered with his unique combination of wit and wisdom. So, Chrome Dreams are to be congratulated for issuing this double album containing 52 wonderful tracks of the kind of music to be heard on TTRH. The only thing missing is the man himself but that shouldn't deter anyone from acquiring this marvellous and wide-ranging compilation of great music.

Some great tracks with echoes of the 60's in some of the stripped down versions. It gives you an insight into how Bob is influenced by others and fits in well to his account in Cronicles. This is the best Dylan material that has been released for a long time. You can enjoy it new to Bob or old like me!

This album contains some of Dylan's best songs, and alot of people seem to think that it's his best acoustic album. I have to say I disagree there, my favourite being 'another side', but this album has some great songs: there are protest songs such as 'a hard rain's a-gonna fall' (my favourite!) in which Dylan tells us about the hardships, poverty and injustice of the world with lyrics that paint almost horrific images in your mind, and 'oxford town', a short, very folky tune about racism in America, particularly in the south, and there are songs about lost friendships and love such as 'Bob Dylan's dream', 'corrina, corrina' and 'don't think twice, it's alright', plus bluesy comedies like 'Bob Dylan's blues' and 'I shall be free'. Yes, this album has a great scope, ... Read More:

One of my best friends played this to me when it came out. I was a "prog rock" fan at the time, and considered his obsession with Dylan as rather quaint & vaguely hippy. At first I couldn't get my head around it - and Idiot Wind both intrigued & irritated.

A couple of years later I went to Blackbush to see the old boy perform in a field - and the stand outs all came from this album. So I revisited it - and found out that I'd grown up!

Over 30 years later I never get tired of it. The first side (of the old LP) is unsurpassed, the second side is pretty nearly as good - my favourites change all of the time. This is my No 1 album of all.

Quite awesome - less than a fiver? If you've not got it - then buy it. You can't possibly be ... Read More:

I remember this album when it came out in 1965. I wasn't interested in the controversy - the music just sounded great. I had never heard anything like it...... I still don't know exactly how you would describe this style. Anyway , when it came out it became iconic for some people, which includes me.
Although it's of it's time it's still unquestionably listenable today - interpret the lyrics if that is your whim - you don't have to, in my opinion, to merely enjoy the album at first listening.

Blonde on Blonde

When you've had a rubbish week and the hum-drum routine is starting to get you down, put this record on and be reassured. I love all of Dylan's work but not all of it is as joyful and pleasurable as this. Like fine food and wine, Blonde on Blonde is one of life's great indulgences.

I have refrained from writing a review of this CD too soon as I wanted to give it enough listens to really try and get to grips with it. However after a couple of years of repeated attempts, I am afraid that despite all the hype, this really isn't a great album by any stretch of the imagination. As someone else here noted, if this didn't have Dylan's name attached to it, do you REALLY think it would have made ANY kind of splash at all? Thsi is music for Gramps to shuffle and sip a Mint Julip on the back porch to, it's certainly not a fitting 'return to form' as so many keep repeatedly trying to make us believe (reminds me of all Bowie's recent releases ALL being a return to form.....)

While pleasant enough as background music in some retro hotel lift in the deep south perhaps, Dylan really does sound as if ... Read More:

I have to admit that I am not a great Dylan fan. I adore Jimi Hendrix version of 'All Along the Watchtower' and Nina Simone's version of 'I Shall Be Released'. Yet when I listen to 'Desire' I can suddenly suspend my previous preconceptions and understand some of Dylan's appeal. Starting off with 'Hurricane', a superb indictement of judicial Racism, with lyrics which really hit their target. The rest of the album concerns some far more personal material, such as the last track 'Sara'concerning his wife whom he was on the point of divorcing, a beautifully direct love song, with sublime lyrics. The rest of the tracks seem to dwell on unfufilled love 'One More Cup of Cofee' or 'Mozambique' or to tales about various rough diamonds who seem to be bordering on outlaw existence, such as 'Joey' or 'Isis'. For someone who doesn't ... Read More:
