Bobby Darin was so talented, he could turn his hand at anyones tune and improve it and he could write, produce and insturment his own brilliant songs, this album is a must have but if you are going to get this, you should also look into some of his double albums: 'Commitment/Rare Darin'. For this greatest hits does not cover those albums which were entirely written by Darin and they are brilliant. But if you are only after a hits compilation this is the best one out there.

Make no mistake, this CD is essential. However most people would think that 'essential', would include their greatest hits. This CD may not include his greatest hits, however to quote the booklet enclosed: "The music on this CD does not comprise his hits, but a number of standards which show just how accomplished an interpreter of songs he was." In many instances I prefer Bobby's take on these songs. He truly makes them his own. I have no complaint in regard to the music, however just as a fun little note, not so much a complaint as it has not impacted my enjoyment of the music one litte bit - the short biography in the booklet has some word trouble, one of the few mistakes reads, "... Bobby Darin seemed to touch everything except Beatles Music-he would have got round to it if he'd lived long enough. His version of If I were a Carpenter is definitive. For him it began with one lost night when both he and Connie Francis were total unknowns and he covered Lonnie Donegan's Rock Island Line. 2 years later he'd begun a chart career with some groovy rock'n'roll before reinventing himself a year later as a Sinatra clone. He was accused of copying Sinatra but so what-everybody copies.Even Sinatra who in 1960 copied Bobby Darin! This is a great CD, for starters you get 2 of Darin's albums rolled onto one CD and for only £6.99. That is an absolute bargain! This album is very moving with such protest songs as 'simple song of freedom' which is a simple but very sad song saying just how Darin felt about the Vietnam war. The rest of the other songs are mixed like 'me and mr hohner' is a bluesy toe tapping song with a catchy bass line, other songs are country/folk like 'The Harvest'. If you are a Darin fan then you must have this in your collection, if not give it a go anyway you will not be dissapointed.

This hour long DVD gives us a multitude of mostly unreleased Darin performances, mostly culled from his 1972/73 TV series. These are great to have and are mostly in good quality - although not quite so sharp visuals as the Mack Is Back DVD. And, what is more, the concentration is on songs Darin never recorded or rarely performed live However, the whole thing is a bit of a mess. There is no title for each song, giving date and place which would have been nice. There is no indication of who the two duets are with (Bobbie Gentry and Connie Francis). The switch from 1973 to 1959 for the Ed Sullivan clips is jarring. There are not even any opening credits. It's great to have these clips released, but a little bit of thought could have gone ... Darin and Mercer combine terrifically on this wonderful CD. Right from the opening duet you cannot help but realise that these two masters of their respective arts are having a great time. The combination of Mercer, best know as a song writer but proving that has a subtle aptitude for delivery, and Darin, the super crooner, makes for a CD that is far more than the presentation of a set of Mercers songs. While listening I could not escape the feeling that I had stumbled into a bar where a couple of friends, with sublime musical talent, were singing away at a piano.
