These are the best of the Booker T & MGs recording from 1968 to 1972, after their succesful Atlantic career. Time is tight, Soul limbo and Melting pot were the huge hits with a more funky and outspoken sound. The other instrumentals vary from good to excellent (great versions of Born under a bad sign, Something, Mrs. Robinson) except for the weak vocals on Johnny I love you. This is the one to buy after the Atlantic Best Ofs.

This may not be worthy of 4 stars but its nearer that than 3 for me. These guys were the backing band in the sixties for the Stax/Volt labels. Most of the records you hear by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave etc had these guys playing, and theres a good reason for that, they are very good musicians.

Everybody knows 'Green Onions', it remains a classic instrumental, apparently made-up in the studio. The cover of 'I Got A Woman' motors along, propelled by some infectious drumming from Al Jackson. A change of pace for track 6 gives the guys to show off their blues playing on 'Behave Yourself'. This is a lovely slow blues, which builds up a head of steam and gives Booker T a chance to show off his Hammond playing.

I've been looking for a Booker T & The MG's compilation but couldn't decide which as they seemed to focus on either early or later recordings. This one compiled by Elvis Costello is a blinder. Even the best Hammond organ players can sometimes sound a little "end of the pier" but these selections are great and the live "Green Onions" is well worth choosing over the studio version. The other live track "Bootleg" also steams along but there is a good mix of tempo across all tracks. Great sound and highly recommended.

This was the last album by the classic lineup of Booker T and the MG's: Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson. The merely curious might be expecting that the band chiefly famous for 'Green Onions' and for the music to the BBC's cricket coverage would be one-hit wonders, who can't sustain interest over the course of a whole album. After all, what we are talking about here are instrumental tracks by the Stax Records house band, a combo that specialised in backing singers like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. In fact, the band is a lot better than merely listenable. Walk down the street with this on your earphones and you can feel like the star of your own personal blaxploitation movie.

This late album by the great Stax Records house band is a fine addition to their majestic catalogue. English listeners will note the title track from its use for many years as the theme music to BBC cricket coverage (it's odd how you expect the original version to fade away after thirty seconds). But there are other gems here: there's a remarkably soulful and jazzy version of 'Willow Weep For Me', with Jones on acoustic piano; the great 'Hang 'Em High', whose mixture of R&B and cowboy music was hugely influential on the Jamaican dub scene; a cool version of Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady', bringing Jimi back into the soul music camp; and a fascinatingly menacing version of 'Eleanor Rigby', full of ominous flattened fifths, the most successful cover I've heard of a ...
