Misery is the thing here and a finely articulated misery at that.

It's difficult to imagine anyone cracking a smile in the studio
during the recording of this, The Breeders, fourth album.

Jollity is not of course a prerequisite for fine music.
There is something quite admirable about the consistently po-faced
frown and pout managed here by Ms(s) Deal and Mr(s) Lopez and Medeles.

The band, none-the-less, often manage to achieve unintentional hilarity.

'Here No More' is the kind droll minor key country hoot Ms Welch would be proud to have written.

'Night Of Joy' a dour promise of anything but.

The stripped-down minimalism of 'Mountain Battles' a near ... Read More:

Escaping from the shadow of your former band isn't easy. Norman Cook, Dave Grohl and John Lydon did. Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and Billy Corgan didn't. And neither did the Pixies songwriters Frank Black and Kim Deal. Not that they actually had a shadow to escape from, as the Pixies never actually sold that many records because they were (nearly) history when being unkempt and sullen became fashionable in 1992. If Black's 'Debaser' and Deal's 'Gigantic' had appeared in 1994 when the world was crying out for someone to fill Kurt Cobain's cardigan they probably would've been huge. As it was that task fell to Green Day, but Deal's new band, The Breeders, scored a hit with 'Cannonball' and eventually this record went platinum.

The best thing about the Breeders is that their songs do the same to your mind as those of other bands your feet jig up and down or make your arms imitate instruments or your head and your body do that little sitting down dance where one goes to the left and the other to the right. Listen to 'Opened':

And I saw the wind blow back her Barbie doll hair
Robin flies again

and those word will get between your ears and ... tickle you, mentally. There is plenty of that on this album, but there's also a lot that sounds as though no thought or effort has gone into it, songs worthy of that musical dirty word: side-project. They weren't at the level of Last Splash at that point, and the band is not as impeccably tightly-locked ... Read More:

This was my favourite album of 2002 and I still love it. It's very different to The Breeders' previous album Last Splash. Nowhere near as poppy and fun, it has a more mature feel, and there's only really one track on the album that in any way harks back to 1993, and that comes near the end of the album. But that doesnt matter because what you get instead in just incredible. There are no duff tracks on this album at all, each one is expertly performed and produced and what makes it special is they all come together so well to give the album a great sense of completeness.

It is hard to imagine a song that better sums up what summer is about to me. The guitar-based formula is hard to resist, and if you aren't singing along with Kim Deal (ex-Pixies bassist) and Tanya Donelly (ex-Belly star) by the end, there is something wrong with you. This is contagious pop at it's very best, and while the lyrics are a bit incomprehensible at first, it does nothing to crush the spirit of this irrepressible song. So go buy it people!

Music : Son of Three
The song Son Of Three is fast paced excellent good time sing along with some of the weirdest best lyrics ever and Kim's voice is perfect , The cover of Buffy Theme is not much different so if you like it off the show your in for a treat,Safari Live is a excellent song and has the usual live treatment.

If you already own all The Breeders and are a fan i think the B-Sides are pretty good worth the money.
