Not many singer-songwriters can present something new with a compilation CD spanning 35 years of their artistic career. It has worked brilliantly for critically acclaimed Canadian icon, Bruce Cockburn. In particular, the collection features compositions from the early seventies that may no longer be familiar. Others are taken from various recordings made in the nineties. Three pieces are new creations recorded especially for this CD. Expertly produced by Bruce and long term friend and collaborator Colin Linden, they all sound new and fresh. Bruce is a acoustic guitar virtuoso as well as a composer expressing himself in many styles and rhythms: from blues to jazz to country and folk. The result is one hour and eight minutes of total listening ... Read More:

As a very long time Cockburn fan I really, really loved this, apart from the "Pitchfork" track, which is horrible and goes on too long. I always leap across the room to skip this track, and I was really pleased he didn't perform this song at Blackheath as he did the previous time I saw him. Having said this, the rest of the cd is sublime, brilliant, typical Cockburn and the best he has done for a long time.

British popular music listeners have become less and less surprised in recent years by the quantity of good music coming out of Canada. The World Historical Importance of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young has long been recognised, but the success of bands like Arcade Fire and (to a lesser extent) The Dears, Black Mountain and Hidden Cameras, among others, has for the first time made the Great White North slightly cool. In Britain, Bruce Cockburn stands somewhere behind and between the superstars and the trendsetters; though he sells out major halls throughout North America, his following here is of a "cult" character (a couple of years ago he did a tour of VERY small venues). Life Short Call Now is among the best of his recent work, and if ... Read More:

If I had to choose my favourite Cockburn album then this would be it (though it would be a hard decision). All the usual fine guitar work and lyrical poetry is here, but there is also something extra special. Every track is perfectly crafted - from the reflectiveness of 'The Strong One', the power of 'Justice' to the sheer beauty of 'Loner'. You will certainly not be disappointed.

Music : Live
Some great songs, very confident vocals - not always Bruce's strong point - and an album that really catches the atmosphere of a live gig. Hightly recommended.
