You can't go wrong with Bruce Springsteen's entire catalogue, and seeing as how most are on a very low price you could pick them at random and still have a lot of nice surprises (but maybe not the Lucky Town era). This compilation is an interesting mix of tracks, but it barely scratches the surface particularly of the pre Born In The USA time and centres too much on the ones since then. There's practically nothing from Greetings, The Wild, Nebraska and Darkness, the huge amount of live tracks are also overlooked, so I think this is aimed more at the very casual listener who isn't concerned what great album tracks they're missing. Sadly only Born In The USA and one track off Born To Run get all the attention on the radio, so I say to anyone you ... Read More:

Great ! Superb ! Fantastic ! I agree that picture could have been better, but music overcomes it all ! Something not seen. We in Croatia would say "prava festa" (true fiesta) for all of people in the venue: the musitians and the audience, and therefore all the people who watch it on DVD.... Really must have DVD.

1980's 'The River' can probably be regarded as Bruce Springsteen's first move toward a more commercial sound. After years of sober epics punctuated by the occasional radio-friendly song, he turned out a stack of uptempo three-minute songs. Eight of the first nine tracks on this album are in that style. Far from being routine love songs, however, they feature Springsteen's vivid turn of phrase and odd storylines. On 'Sherry Darling', for instance, the subject threatens to throw his girlfriend's mother out of his car. The impassioned 'Jackson Cage' (well, his songs usually are impassioned) is a highlight, while 'Hungry Heart' is an obvious single, if a relatively unsuccessful one. I bought this album because I already loved the 'Badlands' and I went to the recent London Emirates Stadium gig, where he played some other tracks from this album. I own Nebraska, Born to Run, Born in the USA and the recent Magic and I love them all, but this surpasses them in my opion. A truly awesome album, every song is fantastic.

THE best Springsteen record. For starters its' got Atlantic City my favourite song by the boss. This is quite a dark album and the stripped down man with guitar, harmonica and great voice really fits. The album is mostly quite slow but does pick up pace at times (like the brilliant Johnny 99). Flows perfectly track to track and the songs on this album are great. Add to your collection. You won't regret it.

As a Springsteen fan of over thirty years' standing, I was wary of this album. I am not the kind of fan who follows "their" artist, right or wrong, and after witnessing a live BBC broadcast of some of this material, I was not of a mind to purchase it. The concert had Springsteen and an entourage of fiddlers, led by E Street violinist Soozie Tyrell, being lauded by an audience of bearded, out of time clapping, ageing folkies and I simply could not reconcile the performer I saw on stage that night with the author of "Thunder Road", "Badlands" and "Jungleland" ! However, upon listening to this album, I have to swallow my pride and admit I was wrong in my preconceptions. This is a truly great musical and lyrical album, and great fun to boot ! A lot of fans and critics enjoy using the term `the Springsteen canon' when it comes to discussing the highs and (very few) lows in The Boss' career. When it comes to The Rising, the canon is very much filled with some of the finest gunpowder around. Simply put, this is one of Springsteen's best. The hype that surrounded the album's release focused on his first full recording with the equally legendary E-Street band and of course, the fall-out from 9/11.
