Brian Ferry as a singer songwriter I can take or leave.Roxy Music in small doses.Ferry as an artist who does stacks of cover versions? Yes definitely.
The Dylan collection is not the first time he dabbled in Dylan as A hard rain's gonna fall was made in 1974 in a radical makeover which was more Barry McGuire than Bob Dylan-whose original had been acoustic.
Purists may object but then they aren't the ones who'd have the imagination Ferry has.
For a start this is more a label of love. Its never going to be any sort of chart record unless public taste moves back to where it was before the 80s.
I now look forward to Ferry doing a Beatles covers album

Some years back by accident I was introduced to this Great Band - "Roxy Music". Its True, they have their own style of music unique to them! Immediately I loved their style of music and bought this and many of its albums. This album features a collection of the BEST tracks from Roxy music and of Bryan Ferry. MY favourtie is More than this! Roxy music dates back to about 20 years, one aspect i like about their music is the introduction of the sax in some songs and the organ,it goes realy well with Bryans vocals. Brillianty compiled into one of the best albums of Roxy Music! Even if you like other types of music, listen to this will open you to another level of music. A must have and must listen.

Before David Bowie, before John Lennon, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and so on and so on tried it, Bryan Ferry cut loose from his art-school, avant-garde rock career with Roxy Music to lay down what were viewed at the time, deeply uncool cover versions of songs such as "It's My Party" and "These Foolish Things". It didn't go down too well at the time and, to be fair, it doesn't match up to some of his later, more trademark recordings. But it is an interesting collection all the same, leading off with a wonderfully kitsch cover of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", where Ferry outleers even himself in his vocal posturing. "The Tracks Of My Tears" is nice, as is "God Only Knows", and, to this day, his cut of "These Foolish Things" makes it into my top fifty ... Read More:

The only music that I had heard from Brian Ferry was his 1984 album Girls and Boys, which is the best 80s album I have heard. I was expecting something at least vaguely similar or showing the same kind of great atmosphere and great songwriting, but instead this is boring, unemotive, and forgettable light-rock. Don't listen to this review if you already know what the music is like and happen to be an admirer of that sort of music, but as a warning for anyone having heard Ferry's amazing 1980s album 'Boys and Girls', this may as well not be the same person. There is nothing that I find remotely engauging in this album. It is the worst CD I have, (and wish I didn't have).

Bryan Ferry's unique take on these 30's classics is a rare treat. Much more vibrant than typical modern pap pop rock. These oldies classics are the new new, especially for all you budding ballroom stars. Time to get a spin on. Great.

If I may just add a couple of pertinent observations to the two excellent reviews already posted...

First one may be stating the obvious, but the collection is in chronological order, based upon the albums that the tracks are drawn from (there is slight variation in chart chronology). This bucks the recent frustrating trend among some compilers to take a more random approach and it's a definite plus point.

Secondly, all the tracks have been digitally remastered. The earlier material in particular now sounds brighter, certainly louder, though I can't make my mind up as to whether they're really any better.

I have the first Ferry/Roxy CD compilation dating from 1986 - amazingly I've seen it still available today in a certain high street ... Read More:

Although Bryan Ferry’s other solo albums have their peaks, only In Your Mind can rival The Bride Stripped Bare for consistent quality.

This masterpiece is most like Ferry’s other output in that it mixes his own compositions with well chosen covers. It’s most different in the bare emotions exhibited – more like Bryan stripped bare. Hardly anywhere else in his output, is Ferry so moving or so moved. That's not to accuse him of lack of feeling or emotional coldness: it's just that elsewhere, he seems more distanced, more in control.

The sleeve gives a strong hint at the mood of what it contains: steely greys and blues, a brooding Ferry, tense and troubled. The opening track, mind you, is an exception, a denial of the prevailing ... Read More:

I bought this album originally in the 70's when it was released as an obscure piece of vinyl on the basis of This is Tomorrow, I never expected to like let alone enjoy the rest of the songs on here which really surprised me. I find it a shame that he never persued some of the style brought to life on these tracks and have only ever made this the solitary album in my collection by Ferry. Worth a listen for sure and more.

Probably his best solo album for quite a while, but sadly that is not much of a recommendation.
Having said that, it certainly has its moments.
It's serves as quite a good precis of his career, a wondeful Dylan cover and a poor Dylan cover; Some "old style-lounge lizard Ferry" excellent stuff, some pointless waste of time inclusions that just serve to irritate and dilute the good stuff; but best of all, a truly wonderful Eno collaboration at the end, that appears over the horizon, out of nowhere, makes you think what could have been
