I left Budgie alone for many years after seeing them described as 'pedestrian.' They may be many things, but after hearing this album, 'pedestrian' is one of the last words I'd think of. Most of their riff-laden music rattles along at a cracking pace and the less-frenetic moments, especially on 'Riding My Nightmare,' reveal their craftsmanship.
I had heard 'In The Grip Of A Tyrefitter's Hand' before and this is my favourite track, being intense and dramatic. 'Parents' is another highlight and the acoustic version is a welcome bonus. Throughout the album, however, there's so much going on. It isn't all about heavy-riffing, though they do have more licks than an affectionate dog. There are many effortless mood changes and Ray Phillips does a lot more ... Read More:

As previous reviewers have said This really is one of the finest albums of the NWOBHM era. [ God how i miss those days ]This album is every bit as good today as it was then. It`s true that the band never found there niche within the H/M scene untill it was to late but don`t let the fact that you may not have heard much if anything about this band or about there albums. This album is full of great songs & great playing & in guitarist John Thomas they found one of the best players around at the time. Check out "Turned To Stone" If you like your Rock/Metal & you like songs you can walkaway singing & enjoy great sounding albums with great playing, then this is a must buy.

ok - i love budgie, and the first four albums are some of the greatest rock albums ever made. my gripes here are - firstly, the extras. aint there no out-takes and demos from around this time that could have been included? instead of re-makes of classic songs from this album which are, frankly, inferior? there must be something in the archives?

secondly, the re-mastering. i was expecting great things. but whilst the sound is nice and fat, it seems to me that its nowhere near as punchy as it could have been. in fact, if you listen to this and the vinyl back to back theres really not that much difference. this is evident by the recording levels which are not very loud at all. i understand that the band had a hand in the re-mastering? hey burke, what happened? ... I have rated this album for a very long time. In fact I bought the LP when it came out in '71. I cannot elaborate any further than the previous reviewers on how good it is, but was it the office junior at 'Remasters R Us' who did 'Guts' the first track? On the original LP it starts with a lead guitar intro, then joined by the drums and bass, increasing in sound level as it does so. On this remaster its a very loud intro, then when the drums and bass come in its like it hits an automatic recording level max. This quietens the lead guitar making the combined sound on the same sound level of the intro, and muffled. There is also some hiss on the start of track 4 N.d.p.w. Its a shame because the rest of the tracks sound good. I'm surprised this wasn't sorted out before release. Having ... Read More:

It is the fourth work of '74 year announcement and "Budgie". The drum has alternated from "Ray Philips" to "Pete Boot" in this work. The member alternation seems to have succeeded because it has brought the sound the thickness and weight drumming alternatively. Feeling that pulls music is very comfortable, and it listens to a heavy lock of Gorigori with the sea weed to know the jar of a very heavy bass drum in this work though the drum is light, and the rhythm also receives the impression that it is monotonous by one, and music is smooth in "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend" of the former work now. Especially, the effect appears remarkably in the first album title tune "In For The Kill" and the fifth "Hammer and Tongs", and their most important works. I feel the thickness of the sound ... Although a lot of people speak highly of Budgie and strongly rate this album they never made it as a big band and I can understand why. Yes they are talented musicians and have some great musical ideas within most of their songs but as a whole none of the songs on this album make the grade. The lyrics are poor and most tracks last too long. They clearly have been a great influence on other bands, it is just a pity they can't combine the individual riffs, licks, solos etc. into a great song.

Hmmm a strange one this, even by Budgie's own especially quirky standards. This 1976 album saw a bit of a departure from the bands usually sludgy and bluesy rock sound and they incorporated ......funk elements! Oh lord have mercy, Welsh funk! But wait, this is actually good, surprisingly so.

This album kicks off in excellent fashion with the groovy, up tempo `Anne Neggen' which is very similar to Wishbone Ash's `Jailbait' (every 70's rock band has at least one song about under age females!). It's perhaps my favourite Budgie song with some wonderful guitar riffs, far from metal and far from heavy but I suppose Budgie's inclusion into these archives is based on their early 70's and 80's work, rather than their supposed late 70's slump, although I'd have to say I've enjoyed this as much as ... Not perhaps the live album that most Budgie fans wanted, but a welcome release all the same. It is very odd to hear a guitarist other than Bourge or Thomas tackle the famous riffs --- but this guy does so with enthusiam. The heavier material is tackled well (the new guitarist adds some modern touches which freshen things up) but the quieter passages suffer badly. The Napoleon Bonapart intro in particular is ham-fisted-- which is tantamount to Budgie-heresy! Overall, not an essential purchase but by Budgie's own high standards certainly not a duff album either... Footnote 2004: Budgie-philes probably won't shed too many tears that the band now have a different guitarist, who by all accounts, is top notch. Go see 'em live!
