Haven falling deeply in love with several bands that claim to be influenced by Camel (Pendragon, Arena, Knight Area etc...) I thought I'd go back to the source.

Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

It probably all seemed very clever and arty at the time, but this album might as well be inspired by reminiscences of a tea party as Snow Gooses.

It's just all so polite and nicey nicey and oh so Eengleesh. It sounds like the soundtrack to a 70's BBC educational kids TV show. Come to think of it it probably was used for one.

Prog at the time needed a good kick up the pants to survive, via punk, which thankfully it got and it has.

For Prog Archeologists only.

I've probably offended ... Read More:

This album seems to be the one that get the vote as Camel's finest, and on listening to it, it's not hard to see why. Chock full of exquisite and wonderful melodies, this is both Camel and the genre of soft prog rock at their finest, and showcases beautifully what this genre of music is all about. Simply divine!! I'd heard Lunar Sea a few times on internet radio and that caught my attention; that is definitely a highlight of the album, being a jazz-infused prog rock instrumental, but I'd have to say that Air Born is my personal favourite track on Moonmadness. It defies superlatives and only listening to this track for yourself will demonstrate why this whole album deserves your undivided attention. Go ahead and get this and hear a fine example of ... It was quite by accident that I bought this LP back in 1974 os so, It seemed like a heavy metal Genesis but had more moments of sheer beauty and exuberence than I had ever heard. Listening back to it, it is every much (?) what I remember. There is little diference IMHO between the sensibility/sensitivity of Andy Latimer and David Gilmour, for my money the nicest guitarists ever. There is a fine line to be drawn between say the excesses of ELP and the pastoral delights of Caravan etc and this record sits comfortably in the middle, smoking a pipe - but they'd rather have a cigarete.

Marvellous stuff but check out Caravan by Caravan.

mmmmmmmmm

A lovely album, particularly welcome at a time of all the punk ghastliness with which the UK music scene was so sickenly polluted at the time. Camel was one of the bands from the early seventies who could not only play their instruments well but still write imaginative, engaging and sometimes humourous songs. Tracks such as Unevensong and Metrognome are a delight, whilst the addition of Richard Sinclair (ex-Caravan) to the band's lineup was undoubtedly beneficial.

It is a bit weak sonically and, as noted by others, would almost certainly benefit from quality digital remastering. Why this particular album, one of their very best, should have been overlooked for such treatment is a mystery. But musically, it always was and always will be quite beautiful.

After three disappointing albums and numerous high impact lineup changes, Nude represents yet another facelift for Camel. However, this time the results are better, and this album is arguably Camel's best since 1974's 'Mirage'.
If you can imagine Pink Floyd, Vangelis and Supertramp collaborating together on a movie soundtrack, you're pretty close to what Andrew Latimer and co. have pulled off here. In fact, I would go as far to say that Nude is the album that 'The Snow Goose' should have been back in 1975.
A highly conceptual work, for the most part, Nude is instrumental, but the addition of selected vocals/lyrics, dotted throughout the material compliments the overall collection of tracks on offer. The atmospheric 'Docks' and the swashbuckling 'Captured' are the ... Read More:

I bought Lunar Sea after i had bought Mirage, and i since getting Lunar Sea, i am about to purchase my 5th camel album (after getting Snow Goose and Moonmadness). There are a number of rare tracks on here, that you won't find anywhere else, including several live versions of camel classics. It covers a broad spectrum of Camel's music (from what i've heard), from the original lineup on disc one, through the alternating lineup through the 80s on disc 2, and the sheer variety astounded me at first. Songs like Cloak and Dagger Man from Stationary traveller, were unlike any camel stuff i'd ever heard before. I'd suggest you get this, if you are (like me) getting into Camel for the first time, and you can build up your collection based on what you hear here (except the Camel Productions ... Read More:

I Can See Your House From Here completes the trilogy of post Moonmadness patchy works. Like the previous two albums there is much to enjoy, but the songs are polarised from being top notch one minute to downright awful the next.
'Wait' opens the album promisingly enough with some good musical flair and some ELO/Supertramp style vocals. 'Who We Are' and 'Hymn To Her' show that Camel can put out a decent ballad or two when they put their minds to it. Instrumental wise 'Eye Of The Storm' and the quite excellent 'Ice' deliver the goods.
However, these tracks are counterbalanced by some serious pap. 'You're Love Is Stranger Than Mine' is another poor effort by Camel to write a hit single, while 'Neon Magic' and 'Remote Romance' are simply embarassingly duff.
Better albums were ... Read More:

This album is very much of it's time in both its theme and it's production. It's a small treasure in my Camel collection. If you have your doubts about it, it's worth looking up the "Total Pressure" DVD of the 2 hour DVD of the live show recorded at the time, and now available from the band. The line-up included much of the studio band of the time, including Chris Rainbow, and some rather notable guest appearances from old friends.

This is definitely a very fine debut album from the prog rock band Camel. The music is finely crafted and well played by musicians who obviously knew what they were doing, and the tunes are excellent, with Never Let Go being my personal favourite song here. The vocals aren't that great but in no way at all detract from this album, it's just that you're not going to find a Robert Plant or a Jon Anderson here. But overall, this album delivers big, and even better was to come, marking Camel out as a truly outstanding band. Why they were never more generally popular is just one of those mysteries in the music world. I'd certainly recommend!
