I wondered why these two albums had been packaged on one cd. Now I know: they complement each other so well. Now, depending where you get your information from, the albums have either been placed in reverse chronological order, or they haven't. I don't really care. It doesn't really matter. Nevertheless, I listened to The Spotlight Kid a few times first. Yes, The Spotlight Kid is quite bluesy (for want of a better word). It's slower and less manic than Safe As Milk, and way, way, way less complicated than Trout Mask Replica. That's not a bad thing though. this is GENIUS. I know it seems hard to get into but it's not really. Once you, yes dare i say it, 'get it' then you will listen to hard zappa, varese, meshuggah, like it was abba. but that is to take away from this slice of magnificent music. listen, I'm just sparing you my brothers review which will, like other reviews, indicate this as the best album ever made. For those that have difficulty on these pages, grow up. and if you want to sing along, buy clear spot. I wanted to be cool and say i have a captain beefheart album and be cool but not actually like the music etc

I first heard this when it was released, in the UK, on Sunset Records, a budget label who also released the Bonzo Dog Band albums etc. This was one of the albums that nearly everybody I knew at the time had in their collection. In the late 1970s when Punk and second hand record shops arrived in Dundee this was one of the albums that people couldn't give away. In that era peopel were casting off their previous music collections and getting rid of anything Prog Rock or Hippy, this album falling into the latter category. I deeply resented being told that I shouldn't like all the stuff I liked before so I clung on my own judgement and still consider this as a classic, not just of Beefheart's career but I would put it in my top 10 1960s albums, and there is ... To my old chum Paul Harisson, when we started to discover the pure music that is Captain beefheart? Not as arhythmic as Troutmask or as overproduced as the still-wonderful Strictly personal ( and how I wish i hadn't swapped the divers-bell gatefold album for Led Zep II), but the first time that I realised there was music inside strange sounds, and outside of the bubblegum crap that was, and still is, most popular music. The good Captain fell into the later category but although it was challenging to my young ears I absorbed it and began to really like it. The problem really lay in the fact that it was HIS music and not mine. Later, after the ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans and Moonbeams seemed to signal the Captains decline I came across this, Shiny Beast on its release. This was my own Captain Beefheart album and it was terrific! It kicks off with Floppy Boot Stomp and story about a hick farmer competing with the devil for his soul. whilst i agree that the title is a little misleading, i bought this album a couple of years ago having been a fan for several years and already owning most of the albums from the `classic period' such as `safe as milk', `trout mask replica', `clear spot' and `lick my decals off baby' (not available on cd in this country but well worth tracking down a vinyl copy- it's musically similar to trout mask replica but without all the weird `field recordings' - making it in some ways more coherent and listenable than the former to my ears). But back to the point. If like me you own those albums and wish to further explore the weird and wonderful world of the captain but don't have the immediate funds to buy all the albums, this gives a reasonable overview of the later albums, generally drawing ... Out-takes, demos, radio spots, live performances and all in a beautifully presented 'boxed' set (no nasty jewel cases here)with bound in booklet. A real labour of love. Completist heaven and wonderful performances covering his entire musical career centring on Trout Mask. Perhaps not the best introduction but then why not. If you like Don's music and haven't got it yet there's only one thing left to do.....

The Captain's first recordings show the R'n'B origins of the Magic Band, and showcase their already able talents. A brilliant cover of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and the Captain's amazing voice and harmonica on 'Frying Pan' are gems entirely unlike later work, though just as good. Raw, and very danceable blues.
