In my opinion it is very difficult to identify one version of a work as great as this . Different interpretations can tell you so much more about a work .

That said this marvellous recording from the early 1980s was my introduction to a 25 year long love affair with this piece . Perlman spins tone of gold whilst also allowing introspection in the slow movement .

That said I wouldn't be without Menuhin/Furtwangler on Testament, Oistrakh/Cluytens on EMI or Hilary Hahn on Sony either

I bought this as a gift for my niece, since I wanted her to be educated about classical music as she was on her way to college. Ended up buying two copies as I found I loved it so much. Normally I like to pick and choose my orchestras, composers, and conductors, but this collection has jujst about everything. Also, I'd never bought some of the more "popular" items (Strauss and Grieg) as I'd heard them a million times, but now I have them and the performances are all great. This truly has a smattering of it all, and if you're not a classical music lover, it's bound to turn you on to the stuff.

Don Giovanni is perhaps the greatest opera of all and has been very lucky on disc with many fine recordings. This one, however, just about tops the lot. It has Guilini and the Philamonia at the top of their game, a simply wonderful cast with Wachter as the most demonic Don on record, and Legge's superb production. The recording still sounds well though not quite up to the latest digital standards, of course. But it is one of Legge's best. Just listen to the climax with chords thundering and Frick's sepulchral bass summoning Giovanni to hell. If the hairs don't rise on your neck then you can demand your money back!
For a refreshing alternative try Jacobs (HM) but all round this one is the tops.

Fauré is perfectly at ease in this Requiem in that extremely agitated period of 1900, agitated by the industrial revolution or by the social war going on in the mines and the big factories. This world cut in two with the haves on one hand and the have-nots on the other, and the tremendous violence between them, between those who had paradise on earth and those who only had paradise beyond death, and death is flattening all differences into some long walk or long march to that beyond no word in no language is able to name, let alone describe. Fauré tried then with his music to take us from the riches of Madeleine's church in Paris to the soul-breaking death, that door to a somewhere that is nowhere in our knowledge. Soft, deep, somber, lurking behind ... Read More:

Don Carlo is my favourite opera and I think that this represents the best recording of it. It is fresh and inspiring, the singing is sublime and the orchestra is magnificently handled.

A great buy and listen.

This work is a joy from start to end, but do not expect to experience any serious epiphany of a religious nature along the way. Apart from the opening dolorosa, it's pure operatic vocal display and lots of catchy tunes to boot: it's as if Rossini has done his duty and is now off on another bel canto romp up Calvary way. This performance is good - not outstanding - and the Philharmonia is marshalled efficiently by the great Giulini. However, for a more unbridled approach (which is what this essentially sunny setting needs) go for Kertesz and Pavarotti on Decca. It's all a hoot anyway - but wonderfully melodic and hummable.

This is one of the finest Verdi sets I have ever heard. Giulini's conducting is searching; it reveals so much about the piece that I had never noticed before. Cappuccilli's voice is naturally dark and mellow and he sings with his customary becautiful line tinged with an appropriate sense of anguish. Cotrubas is the most vulnerable, sympathetic Gilda you will hear but the revelation is Domingo. People might think that the Duke is too light a role for him but his singing is elegant, musical, beautifully shaded in places. The quartet is only one of many highlights. Probably the best all-round Rigoletto recorded (and I have heard almost all of them).
