This music was new to me. I'd read some reviews suggesting this disc was good. Its better than that. The orchestral contribution is incredibly swish, beautifully nuanced. Take the opening symphonia and comparing it with the marvellous Andrew Manze's realision in the concerto Grosso form, here there is extra lightness and bounce. The solo contribution is top notch with Carolyn Sampson radient and inspirational as ever, and James Gilchrist exciting and stirring, Undoubtedly one of my favourite discs of the year.

I received this set as a gift from my daughter in France. I'm pleased with the performance - inventive, well sprung with the feel that it sounds like the sort of performance Monteverdi would have been able to put on. For me, Ian Bostridge's voice and approach are not best suited to the character of Orfeo, although his singing is very proficient.
HOWEVER...on my CD2 there are sound drop-outs around tracks 34 to the end at each track start and finish (as if inserting the track break has interfered with the recording). I tried to persuade Virgin to change it, but was told to go back to the retailer. Can't say I'm impressed with this - why should I have to bother my daughter and send the set back to her for her to send on? I'll have to ... Read More:

Gluck's fortunes have risen dramatically over the last decade, with new recordings of almost all his major operas and a few rarities too. "Paride ed Elena", his third and least known Italian "reform" opera, written for Vienna in 1770, is aptly described by Paul McCreesh in the booklet to this new recording as "buried treasure". The opera's relative lack of popularity might be due to the unusual plot. In many ways, "Paride ed Elena" is the polar opposite of Gluck's more famous musical dramas, which are tragic in feeling even if they have happy endings. The tone of the libretto is light and ironic, telling the story of the Trojan prince Paris' visit to Sparta to abduct the Greek princess Helen. Amore (Cupid) ... Read More:

I thought this was a wonderful performance. The singing was so full of character and really told the story. I loved the John Eliot Gardiner version but I think this one is better.
