The Carpenters are surely one of those romantic must haves in your record collection? If you want to buy a really good comprehensive collection of songs by the Carpenters on one CD, this one makes a bucket load of sense. Kind of hush, Interplanetary Craft, Solitaire, Yesterday once more,Close to you, Jambalaya and many more, they are all here. The Carpenters were always lovely to listen to, and won many fans at the time and later. The fact that they were so prolific too, was amazing. Most of the songs here were played to death and were often high up in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The fact that so many good ones are on here makes this album well worth buying.
Listening to them again brings back how amazing they were, and why we ... Read More:

I haven't been a particular fan of Mary Chapin Carpenter in the past but this album of Christmas songs is a real gem. It is really different to your usual "Jingle Bells" and "White Christmas" festive fare, although there are traditional songs in this collection such as the lovely "Once in Royal David's City" which opens the album, and the absolutely gorgeous performance of "Children Go Where I Send Thee". The rest of the material is new (at least to me, although I understand that a couple of tracks were included on an earlier Mary Chapin Carpenter album)and it is wonderful. The lyrics are thoughtful and really do get to the heart of what Christmas is like (and what it should be about) in 2008. Some of these reflect the spiritual side of Christmas, ... Read More:

'Now and Then' was without a doubt one of the peaks of the Carpenters' career. 'Yesterday Once More' is probably one of their most popular and enduring tunes, but there are plenty of lesser-known gems. 'This Masquerade' is simply sublime, one of the best things the Carpenters ever did. Randy Edelman's 'I Can't Make Music' is both melancholic and gorgeous, while the arrangement of 'Heather' is lush and moving. Most of what's left is covers of oldies lifted up several notches by those wonderful Karen Carpenter vocals. Great stuff. So why not 5 stars? Well, much as I love the Carpenters, I've never quite been able to forgive them for the sickly, cloying horror of 'Sing'. I know other reviewers view it with affection, but for me it's an embarrassment in a ... Read More:

Ms Chapin Carpenter's music is an elusive and deceptive creature.
On the face of it she has always been a singer/songwriter whose album
releases have an enduring, predictable and reassuring quality.
Somehow one always seems to come along just when you need it.

So here we have her ninth offering (not counting the 'Party Doll' and
'Essential' compilations) and the word 'Essential' does indeed
have meaning here.

Her warm, tonally sound, rock-solid mezzo and guitar carry these
thirteen fine songs with good grace, refinement and consistantly
convincing understatement.

Matt Rollings production and keyboards, Dean Parks and John Jennings
guitars, Glenn Worf's bass and Russell ... Read More:

This collection of the Carpenters' love songs is excellent for anyone who loves any type of music. Possibly the only band who can count both Sonic Youth and members of Steps as their fans, their perfomances on every song are second to none. The more upbeat songs, such as "Close To You" and "Top Of The World" are pleasant enough, but in my opinion, it is on the more angst-ridden songs where they excell. Like it says in "All You Get From Love Is A love Song", 'the best love songs are written with a broken heart'. "Rainy Days and Mondays", "Superstar" and "This Masquerade" are all perfect, and my personal favourite, "A Song For You", is the ultimate song that sums up all of the emotions which love encompasses. The Carpenters manage to do melancholy without ... Read More:

As a Carpenters fan it has taken me far too long to buy this album but I can say that it's worth the wait. It's been put together by Richard Carpenter and illustrates again his perfection and desire to keep his Sisters memory alive.

Lots of highlights. For me the two 'work lead' tracks 'Leave yesterday behind' (another Carpenters track with the word 'yesterday' in the title) and 'The Rainbow Connection' are the highlights. I've never heard Kermit the frog singing the latter so had no preconceptions and to me sounded just like a brand new Carpenters track with the distictive voice and sound production. If these are 'work leads' then they're pretty damn fine.

This is my all time favourite Carpenters album.
A collection of some well know hits and some album gems.
The album opens with a beautiful haunting prelude-Aurora, and closes with Eventide with the same music style as the opening track.
Hits such as Yesterday once more and Please Mr Postman are always delights to hear, yet it's the very moving Neil Dimond track-Solitaire that is the highlight of this album, priceless, Karen's voice was perfect for tracks like this.
The biggest treat after Solitaire is Happy, a very different track to the former.
