I have little to add to the other two reviewers' comments, except that I fully agree on most counts. The transfers fortunately needed little if any remastering due to the excellent quality of the original recordings (other Vocalion reissues are somewhat wanting in clarity of sound due to too heavy remastering); also I disagree that Jack Plant (dreadfully mannered and with a frightful fake posh accent) was a good choice as a singer; much better are Les Allen (who displays some incertainty in his intonation however) the underrated Harry Bentley and of course the superior Al Bowlly (on one track only; more of him can be heard on vol. 6).
But it's the quality of the music, arrangements and excecution that really carries the day and makes this ... Read More:

Recently I have been trying to extend my appreciation of classical music into areas I as of yet know little about. I discovered I very much enjoy early choral and religious music - purely because I find much of it beautiful and relaxing, as the music on this cd certainly is.

There is little more left fo me to add to the comments of the other two reviewers; the reissue is one of the very best, both in musical content and in brilliance of sound (due to the excellent quality of the original recordings very little remastering was deemed necessary); it proves that almost hi-fi sound was possible in the early Thirties!
The collection also shows what a superior singer Al Bowlly was compared to a Les Allen (pleasingly unmannered, but not a very good singer) or Jack Plant (a really dreadful singer whose ambitions of a carreer in the USA understandably came to nothing).
The music however is a true eye opener; even after 76 years it sounds unbelievably fresh, spirited and undated ("I Heard" is a primus inter pares, a real gem that can hold its ... Read More:

This was Vocalion's third CD devoted to Carroll Gibbons & his Boyfriends, which name merely denoted a small group drawn from the ranks his Savoy Hotel Orpheans. The first, CDEA 6004, featured guest star Hildegarde; the second, CDEA 6073, mainly featured vocalists singing selections from stage and screen. This reissue concentrates in the main on instrumental numbers, in which Carroll's piano features prominently. About half of the tracks are medleys, and thus within Vocalion's usual generous playing time of 75 minutes you'll hear a total of over 50 tunes.

Anyone who's already bought either of the two preceding reissues will know that the standard of musicianship is quite superb. For me the stand-out track is "Shuffle Off To Buffalo" but in truth you're spoilt for ... Read More:

Another splendid collection of tunes by Gibbons and his orchestra, which again proves that the Orpheans belonged in the top class of British dancebands of the Thirties. All the trademarks are there: good arrangements, first class musicianship, taste, polish, great vocalists, a perfect combination in short.
There is little further to add to the other reviewers' comments except my warmest recommendations.

9.Carroll Gibbons - Oh That Kiss by: Carroll Gibbons
February 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Carroll Gibbons - Oh That Kiss
Carroll Gibbons led the Savoy Orpheans, the resident band at the Savoy Hotel; his Boyfriends was a small group drawn from the full band, and Hildegarde was a visiting American vocalist who recorded several sessions with them during the thirties. Incidentally, the title of this CD should read "Ooh! That Kiss", which conveys a sensuous reaction more in keeping with the songwriters' intention.

Hildegarde takes vocal honours on seven tracks, including the song "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" which was a best-seller. Carroll's fellow-American, pianist and composer Johnny Green, is present on two tracks, and Matty Malneck's violin embellishes Carroll's signature tune of "On The Air".

This is a stylish compilation of thirties recordings, many of which tunes have since ... Read More:

Volume 1 of Carroll's Boyfriends (CDEA 6004) gave some prominence to guest star Hildegarde, and featured a number of standards. The emphasis in Volume 2 leans towards film selections, whereby a medley of up to three songs was carried on one side of a 78 record. Vocalists include Carroll's resident girl singer Anne Lenner, the Australian contralto Marjorie Stedeford, the comedienne Binnie Hale, Bobbie Howes, and the vocal trio of the Carlyle Cousins.

Special mention should be made of the selection from Jerome Kern's show "The Cat And The Fiddle" which was recorded under the pseudonym of The Masqueraders, and which included the vocal talents of Al Bowlly, and a couple of tracks feature xylophonist Rudy Starita. All in all, another treat from a great bandleader. beautifully remastered ... Read More:
