I know and accept that we are all entitled to our opinions, but I find the one-star review for this CD given by one of the listeners impossible and, to be quite honest, a bit of an insult to serious jazz listeners, not to mention the great Cassandra Wilson herself, one of (possibly the best) the best jazz singers of her generation. I have this and all of her other albums, and I find this one particularly masterful in it's execution. The voice sounds fresher than ever and the musicians playing with her are nothing short of superb, each a master in his own right. To dismiss this as "dinner music" (as some apparently have) misses the point of the album entirely. In "Loverly", Wilson takes familiar music and transforms it, with elegance, intelligence ... Some people will be at a loss to categorize this album. Personally, I do find this process unnecessary. I enjoy music that touches my musical soul.

Cassandra Wilson's first Blue Note album is surely one such disc. I will go so far as to say that "Blue Light 'Til Dawn" is really a groundbreaking recording. Ms. Wilson proves that she is never afraid of taking chances. She subtly mixes jazz, funk, rock, blues, African, Latin, country elements (and more!) in this fine musical offering. In this way, she both revolutionizes and redefines the art of singing. Moreover, this is a welcome change from the reworked standards of some other acclaimed female vocalists.

This work exposed her distinctive and flexible voice to a wider audience ... Read More:

I shall say right now that I'm not one of those people who've got themselves all chewed up over whether she sings blues or jazz. That said, I've always felt she sounds at her best when singing blues. She has the emotional depth of interpretation that genuine blues requires and in that she is a singer of rare quality in that field in this modern age. So, I was overjoyed with Belly of The Sun as she returns unapologetically back to the Mississippi landscape of her origins, finds an old abandoned railway station to record in, (what unique acoustics) and gets right down to business during a sweltering August.
The first track "The Weight" comes in with a slightly Latin feel, very gentle, easy summer evening over a pitcher of Margueritas. "Justice" picks it up with a tinge ... Read More:

This is no easy listen... sparse, complex, often brooding arrangements coupled with Cassandra Wilson's deep, earthy voice and complicated phrasing demand your attention. Waver and you're lost. But... give this album the listening time & space it deserves and reap the rewards. Unusual, highly atmospheric tracks that combine superb singing and marvellously "distant" musical backings to weave real magic.

Cassandra Wilson's own excellent, jazz tinged compositions sit alongside a stunning set of ingenious covers from a highly diverse spectrum of composers. "Last Train To Clarksville" is transformed from a catchy pop song into a stripped-down and genuinely effective jazz vocal work-out. "Harvest Moon" slows down Neil Young's already wistful ballad to an almost painful ... Read More:

Some things come into the world perfectly formed.

Ms Wilson's 1999 recording 'Travelling Miles' is one of them.

Less a tribute album to the great Mr Davis - perhaps more
a meditation and a love letter.

The dark, velvety tones of Ms Wilson's remarkably
beautiful voice have never sounded better than here.

The twelve tracks, three of them self-penned, weave a rich
and varied tapestry.

Her take on Ms Lauper and Mr Hyman's 'Time After Time'
(despite unforgivably sloppy guitar tuning from Mr Breit)
is a thing of beauty.

So too, her own song 'Travelling Miles', recalling in some
ways Ms Mitchell's estimable pean to Mr Mingus.

The mercurial ensemble playing on 'Seven ... Read More:

I think the other reviewers have been excessively harsh and, in my view, both unjust and inaccurate in their review of Thunderbird. In fact while echoing their views on past triumphs, I think that Thunderbird is an many ways more accessible to new audiences of Cassandra's work. I would also say the tracks on this release do not exhibit any of the traits Cassandra has had in some of her earlier work to be on ocassion rather self-indulgent in the treatment of certain pieces. So Cassandra, just like Mr Dylan had to do when he went electric, do what you think is right and you will carry many of your less vocal fans like me along with you.

Of the great multitude of jazz singers around today, two immediately stand out. These are Dianne Reeves who goes someway to filling the void left by Ella and Sass by her stellar singing of the standards and the more earthy and sensual Cassnadra Wilson. A couple of the latters earlier Blue Notes ("New moon daughter" and "Belly of the sun") deserve to be in any collection and are true classics. But like the earlier tribute to Miles Davis, this is a little uneven, the original compositions being better than the material previously recorded by the likes of Abbey Lincoln. ("If loving you is wrong" being, perhaps, her best effort at song writing.) That said, I love the Muddy Water's track (a change from the usual Robert Johnson number that usually adorn her albums.)
However, this is a record that ... Read More:
