you gotta give it to him, hes a brilliant songwritter. even if your a greatest hits sort of person, you will recognise the hits like wild world and father and son as pure classics. these tracks are brilliant. top knotch. even though the title track is the 1 minute long last track, almost like he finished the album, and they said, at least mention tillermen somewhere. it is a great song. fans of the office and extras will know this song as the theme (im sorry i cant remember which one). also, fans of skins must buy this album, to hear the original version of wild world. granted sids version is very beautiful, and fits into the storyline very well, you gotta hear the original. any fan of boyzone (if any) will remember father and son, its also a beautiful ... Three great albums in one year is some going. 'Teaser' may be the last of the trio but is no pile of leftovers. Cat Stevens was on a roll, possessed by the knack of marrying simple, but beautiful guitar arrangements to lyrics that tugged at humanity, and sung by a voice that felt as if it was in the room with you. If it's inferior to 'Tea for the Tillerman,' it's only because there isn't as much of it, running to just thirty-two minutes.

The brief, reflective 'The Wind' is classic Cat, as is the bashful 'If I Laugh.' 'Rubylove' is a joyous, bouzouki-led love song, whereas 'How Can I Tell You' is poignant. All of these songs possess fine melodies. Only 'Changes IV' of the songs in the first half is aggressive, though its menacing shadow is effective. ... Read More:

From the sparse, intimate feel of his three previous albums, Cat Stevens opted to move toward a more conventional band-based style. 'Catch Bull At Four' marks the transition and has elements of the old as well as the new. 'The Boy With A Moon And Star On His Head' is the most obvious example of the former, featuring Stevens alone on guitar while telling a tale with a mystical and erotic edge. Lyrically, he is as sharp here as ever. The exotic O' Caritas also harks back and is one of the highlights, featuring a strong vocal chorus and some vital bouzouki and Spanish guitar.

The new is well represented by the catchy, fatalistic 'Sitting' and the hit, 'Can't Keep It In.' Noticeable across the album, as on these tracks is Stevens's move from guitar to keyboards to ... Read More:

As with his previous two albums, Cat Stevens opts for a standard rock band format, playing keyboards for the most part. 'King Of Trees' is outstanding, lyrically and musically, sad but incisive, opening with a beautiful, extended instrumental passage. 'Oh Very Young,' the one track to make it on to the 'Very Best Of' collection is the nearest he gets to his 'Tillerman'/'Teaser' days, a gentle, wistful song about a short, but cherished time in our lives. 'Sun/C79,' 'Bad Penny' and 'Home In The Sky' are the best of the rest, all tracks that become more endearing with each listen.

Unfortunately, the remaining tracks are less impressive. 'Music' has an insistent, almost gospel feel, but the subject matter is cliched, as is 'Jesus' and the over-simplistic 'Ready.' 'Ghost ... Read More:

After two albums of colourful pop and a serious illness, Cat Stevens returned in a much-changed guise. Gone was the fashionable, fresh-faced man about town, and in was the t-shirted, chisel-featured, hirsute troubadour. How much influence his illness had on this music I don't know because the lyrics tend to be vague. The concept of time, however, recurs frequently on this album, especially the shortage of it. In some ways, this is a more interesting album than its more illustrious successors, as it has more twists and turns. 'Lady D'Arbanville' is a macabre tale in folk ballad mode, featuring a beguiling melody. 'Maybe You're Right' is rooted in the present, a resigned reflection on failed love. 'I Think I See The Light' is a brisk, piano-dominated slice of realisation and optimism, ... Read More:

The main attraction of Cat Stevens's first album, enhanced by bonuses of course, is the presence of four major hits. The music, largely orchestra-backed pop, is very dated and not what Stevens is renowned for, but it is entertaining. The unforgettable title track suggested that Stevens wanted to write more than just love songs, though there are several of those on this disc. The other two hits, 'I Love My Dog' and 'I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun' show two other sides of the singer, one gentle, but determined, the other belligerent. 'Here Comes My Baby' is the other hit, though it was The Tremeloes, not Stevens, who scored with it.

So what about the rest? It's a mixture of solid groove ('Baby Get Your Head Screwed On'), painterly observation ('Portobello Road') and throwaway pop/love ... Read More:

cat stevens has always been a very frustrating artist for me. at his best, he is for sure one of the best, and he has turned out some truly beautiful songs over the years. however, even his classic albums were all a bit patchy, with the ordinary far outweighing the great. this album regrettably, is very ordinary and pedestrian. the title track itself is a rambling, directionless peice, and the rest of the album is not much better. the highlight is 'how many times?' but even that is far below his best work. if youre new to cat dont start here. seek out instead 'mona bone jakon' or 'tea for the tillerman' this album is not worthy of him
