This is a splendid disc! The Serenade to Music is performed in its original version for soloists which is quite different (better?) than the subsequent choral version. The soloists present a marvellous account and the orchestral textures provide a ravishing counterpoint. Of particular note is the violin solo at the beginning which ably sets the scene for this account.
The Mystical Songs (text by George Herbert) are wonderfully sung by Thomas Allen and yet again are accompanied with great sensitivity and skill. The orchestral texture in Love bade me welcome is particularly fine as is Allen's performance which captures the tentative steps of the narrator into relationship with the Divine with an understated passion.

I came through this CD in the town where the Te Deum was first in 1734, just by chance. I am portuguese so you might consider my opinion a bit biased, but trust me you won't be deceived.
It is always nice to see less well known composers being interpreted, specially whose work miraculously survived the Earthquake of 1755, which had devastating consequences on one of Europe's most important collections of music scores, that of king John IV of Portugal. As a layman and great admirer of baroque music I would say that it does resonate some Italian influences. Most of the musicians of that time had received grants by king John V of Portugal to study Arts and Music in Rome. There are some moments of intimacy in this Te Deum, which kind of resonate ... "Man invented morals, but tides have none": thus, the words of the apothecary Ned Keene that more or less sum up the lesson to be learned from Britten's greatest opera.

I was at one of the concerts back in January 2004, of which this is a recording. The concert performance was very good; and so is the recording. It does have, however, the clinical feel of a concert performance. Thus the atmosphere of a full-staged production is missing: we do not experience the crash of the pub door and the rattling of the window shutters in the storm sequence that closes act one, or the subsequent breaking of the bottle by Bob Boles, the fisherman and Methodist, nor the hustle and bustle of the barn dance that begins act three.

This set contains the three large scale masses that Bruckner composed, the Te Deum, a psalm setting, a Libera me and two short works for a trio of trombones. Bruckner counts, along with Bach, Palestrina and Schubert as among the best setters of religous texts. He draws on tradition (most obviously Palestrina) and also looks to then current trends in music as far as scale and ambition goes. Despite their large proportions there is no loss of lyrical delicacy.
The three great Bruckner masses are constructed on an epic scale and need a conductor with a firm grip on architecture and an eye for detail if they are to succeed. Matthew Best has no problems on those scores and these versions are amongst the best in the catalogue. Everything about this set ... Read More:
