Chaka Khan was at her height between 1978 - 1985 in the UK, during that period she had 4 top twenty hits. Her first hit was the disco smash I,m Every Woman which charted at #11. Discotheques across the land could be heard playing this track with its orchestrial influence. Strangely enough when remixed and re-released it reached #8. Her #1 hit I Feel For You plus Remix versions of This Is My Night #14 and Eye To Eye #16 a full eight and a half minutes worth are also here. Yvette Marie Stevens to give her her maiden name started out with the 1970,s funk band Rufus and included on this cd is my personal favourite Aint Nobody which i had on 12inch vinyl way back in 1983. The rest of the album contains 4 lesser hits in the UK from later albums ... Read More:

What a stomping CD, overall there are some brilliant tracks here. The quality of song craft is exceptional, the vocal performance really builds it will surprise you. The musicianship is also really nice, these people know their craft. Cats like Beyonce must just listen and weep, this is for real.

One of the original masters of Funk, her talent is painfully underated. Rather than get worked up about quasi-singers like Britney, Kylie and the rest...how about listening to a master craftswoman at the top of her ability. Achingly soulful, shockingly funky, wonderfully elegant and my god, the lungs! She can belt right up there with Aretha, aint no joke!

Everywhere is a phenomenal song, Aint Nobody is a modern club legend and well...Im Every Woman, it truly is, all in her!

*bow to chaka...and her hair*

This lady has got what it takes...and then some... when it comes to belting out a song! Chaka is a diva among divas in the Soul world. She certainly lives up to her name (Chaka meaning "fire"), she burns with talent and there is no-one who can copy her, though many have tried! I Feel For You opens up with a wonderful dance track, "This Is My Night", racey, dancey and definitely a great opening track. Just to slow the mood down a little she then moves onto a ballad called "Stronger Than Before" where Chaka combines her own unique style and flair with that wonderful rich voice. "Eye To Eye" sweeps us along with its catchy intro while "My Love Is Alive" takes us back to the days of street rap and early hip hop. The title track "I Feel For You" combines 2 other ... This 1981 album from Chaka is, for me, a standout offering; This album was, as far as i'm aware, the first time Chaka and Arif Mardin introduced a jazzier feel into one of her pop albums. You simply could not find this chemistry between band members and a vocalist anywhere else - they feed off each others energy and the excitement comes across in boundless joy and energy. Another reviewer commented that you can clearly hear everyone is having a fine time!
Starting off with a Beatles cover, Chaka makes it her own - her cover versions are always completely moulded to her styling and nothing like the original. I know You, I live you, the title track, "Fate" (as sampled by Stardust "music sounds better with you") this album is spilling over with a charm like ... Read More:

I never paid much attention to Chaka Khan until a friend and fellow reviewer persuaded me to listen to her music and that of Rufus, the group she once fronted. Of course, he was right - Chaka is a great singer.

Chaka Khan's biggest hit was I feel for you, which made number two in her American homeland and number one in Britain. I'm every woman, Ain't nobody (with Rufus) and This is my night are among her other classic hits on both sides of the Atlantic.

This compilation is a great introduction to the music of Chaka Khan, but if you enjoy this, also look up Rufus, whose Greatest hits I've already reviewed.

The title 'Echoes of an era', really does sum up this record. It was made by the efforts of Lenny White getting some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world in 1982 together, and making a tribute to the era before their own, and in the process defining their own enormous talent.

This record is just fun. White's intention was to recreate the session's of the likes of Billie Holiday and he does so fantasticly with the charisma of Chaka Chan on nearly every track. The spiky and then flowing piano of Chick Corea especially on Thelonius Monk's 'I mean you' and 'Take the A train'. The well rehearsed rhythm's of Lenny White and Stanley Clarke, looking back to their Return to Forever day's, fits nicely into the blend. My personal highlight of the album, ... Read More:
