A lovely 2CD Classic FM compilation of relaxing music - for mothers as much as their babies - consisting of an interesting assortment of baroque, classical, romantic and modern music with the underlying theme of aiming to relax the listener. Some pieces are chosen partly for their title as well as the soothing effect they have, these include the 'Lullaby' by Brahms and 'The Swan' from 'Carnival of the Animals' by Saint-Saens. The more contemporary offerings are by popular composers such as Patrick Hawes. These are good recordings, as expected by Classic FM, many of which will be comfortably familiar to most of the radio shows listeners. Comfortably safe by Classic FM maybe, but comfortably relaxing too.

What a wonderful collection this is. Anyone with any taste whatsoever in classical music (and plenty who don't) will realise when they listen to this that it is truely a masterpiece. The title track (Danse Macabre) is probably best known (in the UK at least) for being the title music to the BBC series "Jonathan Creek", and has also been featured in an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", showing that it has an ability to grip and excite even those with no classical interest. This collection makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, it has that kind of power. If you buy any classical album ever, this would be a fantastic choice - I can not praise this work high enough.

The recordings found on this disc are some of the best available (...in fact, the Britten conducting Britten is the Gramophone's Recommended Recording!). Add to that the most delightful account of Schumann's "Scenes from Childhood", and you find a fantastic disc. Then look at the price! 5 stars for a well rounded CD, which wont break the bank.

This is a fantastic interpretation of Holst's famous planet suite. The price is worth the Majestic version of the popular Jupiter alone. Here the conductor and the orchestra really extract the full emotional depth of the piece. The whole album is recorded impeccably, with a good balance between the different instruments. Very highly recommended.

Most of those who buy classical music recordings will have these Concertos in some form or another, and may be wondering why they should purchase yet another rendition. Well the simple reason is that this CD is the only one that I have heard to do full justice to all parts of these often misunderstood works. Chopin's piano concertos were written while he was still a young man, and are often criticised for the rather academic and self-concious outer movements. Indeed the long tutti that opens the first concerto is as far from 'Chopinesque' music as he ever got (it was even rumoured that the orchestration was carried out by a colleague), and the 'mazurka' embedded in the third movement is playful, but a world apart from any of the haunting ... Recently I gave a talk on Saint Saens at my local music society and played several extracts of his music all of which were taken from this CD. I have other recording of some of the tracks but those on this cd are better especially those that are conducted by Charles Dutoit. Kyung-Wha Chung the violin soloist in the violin concerto is also of a terrific standard and gives a performance saint saens would be proud of. I would highly recommend this CD to you.

This compendious double album does exactly what it says on the tin. Whilenot everything is top-flight Stravinsky, it is all well-recorded and theOctet, Concerto for two pianos and Dumbarton Oaks are key works well worthhaving.
