For anyone like myself who grew up in the years of the old "Steam Radio" this CD is a must buy. For me, the name of Charlie Kunz went alongside Billy "Wakey Wakey" Cotton, Semprini, Ted Ray, The Stargazers, and not forgetting Peter Brough and Archie Andrews - just a few of the BBC's mainstays of the late 40's/early 50's.

Kunz only had a short spot (15 minutes a time, if my memory serves me correctly) but I well remember his lilting style and a wonderful "way with a song". Listening to these tunes now, and with a more mature musical outlook, I can see just why the BBC chose him - his immaculate timing and resonant chords were just so appealing to a mass audience.

The TV was still waiting in the wings and the radio was ... Read More:

The quality of Pegasus products (and their asking price) is somewhat variable, so it's pleasing to give this a qualified thumbs-up. As is usual, the tracklist carries no dates, but it's also incorrect because track 5 is "Someone To Care For Me", track 6 is "All Alone In Vienna" sung by Vera Lynn, and track 11 is sung by the Carlyle Cousins. On the positive side, whereas the two Vocalion CDs concentrate on Charlie's Rex period, this also takes in some of the earlier Sterno recordings. These tended to be livelier affairs, and give us the opportunity to hear a greater assortment of vocalists, namely Phyllis Robins, Harry Bentley, Dan Donovan, and Eve Becke.

This is a happy trip down memory lane, and for those like myself who remember the era of the good old Steam Radio, it's a must-buy. The first dozen tracks or so are before my time, but as the hits of the late 40's/early 50's come in, the memories come flooding back. Charlie Kunz (1896-1958) was one of the BBC's mainstays, and his fluent easy-listening style must have inspired many listeners to lift up the lid on the old Joanna and give it a try.

Just what did Charlie Kunz have that others didn't? Well, he possessed a formidable technique, but somehow he understated it; he utilised alternate soft/loud passages to give the tunes their colour; and he played exactly the right chords - there was never any wishy-washy playing. Every note ... Read More:

This album is great fun, with exceptional vocals, a few crackles here and there, but for some tracks recorded around 1935 this is quite acceptable, also features the wonderful Tommy Blades superb Xylophone playing on several tracks, Charlie and the Casani Club Orchestra at their best and most entertaining!!
