This debut album is all you would expect from a band featuring musicians, most of whom had served their apprenticeships with the likes of Graham Bond and John Mayall. Colosseum used this grounding to create a fusion of blues, rock and jazz which was often copied but NEVER bettered. From the opener, Bond's "Walking in the park" to "Those about to die" which closes the original album Hiseman and co deliver a top quality set which while tight allows individuals room to experiment. Vocals were never to the forefront in early Colosseum music, four instrumentals on this album are, "Mandarin", "Beware the ides of march" and "The road she walked before" and "Those about to die". In 1969 (when some other guys were doing something trivial like landing on the Moon) Colosseum's Valentye Suite stood out head and shoulders above everything else being played - quite magnificent! The Valentyne Suite (when I were a lad) only had 5 tracks - but is almost perfect. Hiseman's drumming is astonishing, Dave Clempson's guitar playing on a par with Clapton, along with the incredible Dick H-S (RIP) on sax - and the swirling organ from Dave Greenslade. The Tracks 1. This was the first "rock album" I ever bought in early 1971. I obviously still have the vinyl copy...actually I've just dug it out to look at it whilst writing this...the CD enables a casual listen in the car, at work or loaded on to the absurdly tiny 20gb music thingy my son gave me. Each track is an exercise in individual musicial work of the highest order by a band which had yet to peak as it introduced Dave Clempson and Chris Farlowe to an eager fan base. Sadly only 'Colosseum Live' was to come for an overly long period of time...what this band might have achieved, had they avoided piques, is anyone's guess. After the somewhat disappointing "Bread and Circuses" comes a delightful slice of "post-modern" Colosseum [whatever that means, Ed.] This is FUN! Lots of Blues/Rock/Jazz tunes, with brilliant solos from the wonderful (and sadly missed) Dick Heckstall-Smith on sax and glorious guitar from Mr. Clempson. Chris Farlowe is in excellent voice (still amazing after all these years - I wonder what he lubricates it with?). Some great swathes of sound from Dave Greenslades organ and piano, the HUGE bass lines bubbling along with every track from Mark Clarke - and, of course, the ONE and ONLY Jon Hiseman on hitting-things very fast. After Colosseum's brilliant "Valentyne Suite" which was more jazz than blues, came this sprawling, massive, blues-rock storm. Surprisingly well recorded (for a Live album in those far off days of "Philips' cassettes"), this showcases the stunning musicianship of a well rehearsed band playing incredibly well together. Truly awesome....one of the all time classic rock guitar recordings. I had the privilege of seeing these guys do this number at the Bath festival in 1970....stunning!
