This could so easily have been a truly complete collection of all the authorised Cream material but instead of giving us all the live tracks they wasted space with ex-demo tracks of marginal importance. The omission of one of the live versions of 'Politician', from 'Goodbye Cream', one of their finest performances, is unforgivable and means that it is obvious that no-one new to Cream should buy this as a short cut to a complete collection. After all it's not even cheap to buy the (almost) 'complete' Cream this way. It's more economical to buy all 6 original albums which are now cheap and easy to get. But there are two other ommissions as well.
If they wanted to give everyone a reason to buy this set they should have gone about putting ... Read More:

We would spend hours in our teens sitting beside the radio with a microphone in front of the speaker, with a reel-to-reel tape recorder trying to get a decent copy of these sessions. And not being close to a radio during the daytime, inevitably, we would miss a session here and there and curse for doing so. Easy now, innit, with IPod and today's technology, but back then it wasn't quite so clever. And now we have (most) of those long-lost tracks here on one CD. Someone must have suceeded with those reel-to-reel tapes though, as these recordings have been on bootleg for years, and now, finally, the BBC have done the right thing and released them. Mono recordings in most if not every case, this does not matter, it gives an indication toward those low ... Read More:

Despite the poor sound there are some amazing performances on this CD even if they are warts and all. Particularly valuable here is the version of 'Sunshine' which is better than the one on 'Live Cream Vol.2' - in fact it's quite exhilarating, like 'Spoonful' on 'Live at the Filmore' and the live tracks on 'Goodbye Cream' (two of which tracks are found at the end of this disc but oh dear, what a difference in sound quality). This it even manages to be despite Bruce's bass apparently cutting out 3/4 way through the impro so that the other two have to carry it alone until the bass returns for the reprise.
'White Room', after the somewhat chaotic opening vocal section, is also more exciting than the version on 'Live Cream Vol.2' (although this ... Read More:

Clapton makes a memorable start with 'I shot the Sheriff' - but then his list of late 70's - 80's stuff sounds dull and album lapses into boredom. Redemption comes however from the Cream recordings, 'Layla' and 'Cocaine'. These tracks remind us there is still life in E.C. despite a poor 80's record, and such classics as Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Badge and Croosroads remind us of Cream's anthemic playing and the ways they combined guitar with wah-wah pedals and phsychedelic sound to produce music before its time rightly rewards them with their role as 'the first of the supergroups.' Oh, and there's Layla of course.

It all depends on the bass. Without it there's no tension and no gripping involvement. It's all too easy to miss a lot of what Bruce is doing in this particular concert if the hi-fi is not able to make the best of it. Other Cream live recordings are much less difficult to reproduce satisfactorily but all are sensitive to the equipment used because the bass balance is so crucial Cream's music. The reason for the problem here is the new sound of Bruce's bass which doesn't have the python like quality of the old days. Now he plays in a more percussive or plosive way, either as a result of the new sound or else he has sought this sound as a way of registering a new 'Plosive Counterpoint'.
I underestimated some of these tracks because I did not at first ... Read More:

If this really were the best of Cream it would consist almost entirely of live tracks whereas in fact there is only one included here, the celebrated 'Crossroads'. In any case 'Wrapping Paper' and 'Anyone For Tennis' obviously have no business being here as 'the best of' but are here simply because they happened to be released as singles, more because of Cream's management than Cream themselves. On the other hand of course this sort of compilation traditionally rounds up things that are not included on the main albums thus insuring sales to completists.
I really wish they had not chosen to take 'I'm So Glad' from 'Fresh Cream' as this does sound very artificial especially when compared with the amazing live version on 'Goodbye Cream'. There are other far ... Read More:

This imported version of "The Cream Of Clapton" chronicles Eric Clapton's 15-year stay with Polydor, and with 19 songs it offers a very good overview of that period (1966-81), even if several good songs are obviously missing. But the CD runs for all of 79 minutes, and all the must-have classics are here: "Layla", "Bell Bottom Blues", "Wonderful Tonight", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Blues Power", "Let It Grow" and five Cream tracks as well.

If you just want the very best (up until 1981, that is), this CD is a fine choice. It may even make you want to pick up the magnificent live album "Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert" and the superb box set "Crossroads"!

This re-master of the shorter of two live version of 'NSU' is much better than the version on 'Live Cream'(vol 1) as the vocals are clearer and more jubilant, and the guitar much less distorted. It's a lot easier to listen to and much more musically satisfying as each of the players can be equally appreciated in their playing where each is balanced with the others.

I say 'notable mainly' because this is otherwise a compilation of very familiar material which, as far as the studio tracks are concerned, has been recycled over and over again. For comments on these tracks see my other reviews of all the Cream CDs (including the standard edition of the 'I Feel Free' compilation on one CD with studio tracks only),to be found on the last 2 numbered pages of my reviews. ...
