I first got into electronic music a while ago, and frankly couldnt have asked for a better induction. I was recomended this by a friend when I said I liked the electronic stuff on Kid A and he told me that most of it was influenced by this man.
He was right, Shadow is a genius. His skill with a drum machine is matched only by his skill with a sampler and his talent for mixing, perfectly capturing an ever shifting mood with changes of tempo, time signature, key, instruments and genre. Its all captured here, like a beautifully preserved insect in a peice of amber. Jazz, soul, blues, and that ever present loaded-gun backbeat, tying every interesting sample and gorgeous melody together into an amazingly cohesive journey of beats.

I probably should have done this review earlier, but it just seems the right time to get people to listen to properly GOOD music (dance music seems to have gone down the drain a bit).
Josh Davis has come up with another winner here, in a sense that this album is quite removed from Endtroducing. As reviewers have said already (and i agree), this is a more "song"-orientated album, allowing you to skip to a favourite song, whereas endtroducing was more an album to listen through in one go.
The reason i give it 4 (but 4 1/2 in my heart), is because of the two dud tracks slap bang in the middle of the album (namely 'Right thing' and' Monosylabik'). Definitely not DJ Shadow quality.
This shouldn't detract anyone from the rest of the ... Read More:

I bought "The Outsider" on the strength of DJ Shadow's previous work, which is not the way to do it. DJ Shadow seems to pride himself by trying his hands at all genres and at the same time creating his own unique genre. This means you can't judge one album based on how you felt about the other ones; you have to judge DJ Shadow's work on its musicality, not its style.
To be honest I slid the album into my player and was disappointed hugely by the first few songs. I left it at that for a while, and presumed that would be the end of it; however I thought I owed it to 'Shadow to give him another go, and the next track I tried was "Broken Levee Blues". A beautiful blues with amazing guitar work that Jimmy Page himself could have been proud of. It surged immediately ... Read More:

A decent enough collection of funk - some great, some average.

There is one overwhelmingly irritating issue with release however - there are no band names!

Come on guys. Yes, you deserve credit for finding these tracks and putting them out there, but to not include the names of the people who actually wrote and produced the music whilst your names are plastered all over the record is self-indulgent and disrespectful.

I've got loads of collections like this and almost all of them have a section explaining the curator's choices, putting them in historical and geographical context, then a short blurb on each band and the track.

This collection has nothing like that, and the whole release suffers as a result.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have an uncanny ability to get this stuff just right. This CD is absolutely fantastic, I'm very happy with the purchase. I was a little disappointed by the Outsider's departure from his trip hop stylings, but this is right back on track. Worth every penny!!!

From start to finish is definitely how you should play this. Whether you're watching the DVD or playing the CD, it needs to be heard in its entirety.

Being a huge Shadow fan this is probably my favourite collection of his work to date. If you're not a huge Shadow fan then this would be a great place to start.

As soon as you hear the 'whomp, whomp' intro of 'Fixed Income' you'll know exactly what you're in for. Shadow mixes and matches all his best work effortlessly and I've heard some people say they actually prefer a few versions to their originals.

As far as the DVD goes it's excellently shot, with a mixture of Shadow, crowd, equipment and weird trippy visuals that work really well with the music.

The extras aren't bad ... Read More:

A melodic masterpiece, an emotional rollercoaster ride that allows all moods to be catered for. Tracks like 'organ donor' and 'midnight in a perfect world' grab the first time listener. Only after this early stage do the darker, more emotive songs develop for the purchaser, and the true colours of this record are truly portrayed. DJ Shadow can only be envied by DJ's and adored by fans.
A definate neccesite as far as out-there records go.

OK, yes, a few of these songs have been readily available on other releases. But that aside, I would go as far as to say that Preemptive Strike contains some of Shadow's greatest moments.

As epic as Entroducing is, this collection pushes the envelope even further. What Does Your Soul Look Like part 2 is nothing short of vast in scale with its dramatic strings, crashing drums and mournful vocals. In contrast, part 3 is delicate and minimal, a meandering flute and tinkling piano taking centre stage. Every defining characteristic of Entroducing (delicate ambience, long patient pauses, impeccable drum breaks, slow, smoothly paced song dynamics) is taken that bit further in these songs. Despite being a collection of separately composed tracks, the album flows surprisingly well, with ... Read More:
