Just thought I'd do my bit to reduce the ludicrously high star rating of Mr. Rice's dreary and vacuous disc. Lisa Hannigan does well to provide a good contrast to his dreadful vocals, but 'Cold Water' is the only song here of any merit; the rest is over-hyped tosh of the worst kind. May he sink into deserved obscurity as soon as possible.

Like a lot of people I was very hesitant as to whether 9 would live up to its predecessor and had to give it a few listens before I could pass judgement. Although in some aspects it is similar to O- "Dogs" possesses an innocence that would fit nicely with Damien's first album- to me it seems a lot more mature and some of the perfect, beautiful lyrics have been replaced with some more realistic and matter-of-fact ones which are actually just as powerful. For example the chorus of Rootless Tree (which involves a lot of swearing) to me is incredibly realistic and almost like a converstaion- "so * you and all we've been through, I said leave it, it's nothing to you, and if you hate me then hate me so good that you can let me out of this hell when ... The magician that is Damien Rice has pulled another one out of the hat. When I listened to 'O' I thought I wouldn't hear a better album in a long time and I was proved wrong. The album 'B-Sides' shows all the emotions imaginable. From love to pain he takes you through a truly delightful journey. When I listen to a song with explicit language I think sometimes it is unnecessary, but in this album it helps Rice get his emotions across in a magical way. The feeling and enthusiasm put into this album is clear for anyone to see. Also the way in which he can portray his music recorded or live it is just as stunning either way. This is a simply breathtaking album. Any admirer of this genre of music, this is a must have album. Rice is simply head and shoulders ... Read More:

I was so pleased to finally get this cd from Damien as I have been a HUGE fan for well over three years!! I have aquired a lot of songs of his that are live but this album's sound quality is amazing and really captures the atmosphere and beauty of his singing. Although it is only 8 songs there is a really nice mix of popular and lesser known ones and I think Lisa adds a lot of variety and is simply compelling to listen to. Its a great addition to my alarmingly large collection of Damien Rice songs and is a must-have for any fan- especially if you have seen him live and want to recapture your experience (I know I do!!)

I'll get the earnest stuff out of the way. I knew nothing about the problems in Burma until I bought this single and since then I have joined in the campaign and e-mailed the various people instructed to by the various organisiations on freeburma.org
Well done to Damien & Lisa for raising awareness.
With regard to the song, I have been a fan of 'O' since it was released and have been really impressed (and a little smug probably) with it's long-term success. People still seem to be discovering that record as though it is new. It is a proper classic but the follow up is long overdue now.
'Unplayed Piano' is a very much appreciated and promising instalment from Mr Rice and Lisa Hannigan's credit is well earned. This is a beautiful, intelligent ... Read More:

7.The Blower's Daughter by: Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan
December 13, 2004
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : The Blower's Daughter
The Main Feature: Damien Rice's absorbing brand of stylishly un-styled dirty folk music is well known - and is no better flaunted than in 'The Blower's Daughter'. Appropriately, the song is folded into the opening credits of the film 'Closer'. The two share much: a sense of chaste beauty and of withdrawn sorrow, a sense of hope and of despair, a sense of intimacy and of betryal. Rice's haunting vocal, embroidered by the sombre solo cello of Vyvienne Long, melts into bright instrumentals and Lisa Hannigan's vocals - before just as quickly soaring away on the breeze.

Verdict: Adventurous and grounded in emotional intimacy. A song that will get under your skin if you let it - and I urge you to.
