Very good CD, but why didn't they include the original 1978 hit version of 'Oh What a Circus'? The version here is a much more recent version (made for 'Evita') and sounds nowhere near as good as the original.

He was a young, tall, handsome gypsy; girls threw knickers at him and the boys hated him for it. Notwithstanding, Rock On is one of the great pop songs - you know the tune, but haven't heard it in years. It's only one of several self-penned tracks on a wonderful album way ahead of the normal 70's self-obsessed glitter.

Jeff Wayne took Essex in hand for his first album and assembled a star lineup of backing musicians who were probably surprised to find themselves fronted by this winsome, glinting newbie.

Lamplight is that difficult second single and it's 'secondness' shows. Turn Me Loose is a standard rock cover. After those, it's uphill all the way.

On and On is a slight, poignant love ballad with trite lyrics ... Read More:

Personally, I enjoyed this CD very much. I thought the selection of songs was excellent. The fact that he can perform other peoples music so well (sometimes may I add, better than the original performer) makes it a very enjoyable CD to listen to and sing along to. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to sing along to good sounds.

Absolute quality compilation of Mr Essex from the 70s part of his lengthy career. The first five tracks (Hold Me Close, Rock On, Gonna Make You A Star, If I Could & Lamplight) are worth the money themselves - but you get another eleven quality tracks on top of that.
This is just a really thoroughly entertaining compilation. This CD really is top drawer entertainment, & for me, this compilation showcases Dave at the top of his game & 70s fame - Good fun on a bargain priced CD,every track is a treat - almost essential !!

I recently bought a cheap vinyl copy of 'Out On The Street' from a charity shop on the strength that it contained two singles I'd always really liked all those years ago, namely 'Coming Home' and 'City Lights'.

The whole album was so impressive (if a little scratchy) that I decided to buy this double set a few weeks later, which also features David's self-titled album.

Both CDs are highly recommended and great value, especially if you liked Jeff Wayne's 'War Of The Worlds'. The sound quality's pretty good too. It's very clear from the splendid orchestral arrangements and production that Mr Wayne made a huge contribution to DE's career. Great stuff!

This was the first David Essex CD I bought and I love it. What a man, what a voice! David is brilliant at cover versions and even better at his own songs.

An enjoyable bugdget priced CD of David Essex tracks, some memorable nostalgia at a decent price.
Worth it just for "Oh What A Circus","Winter's Tale", "Hot Love" (no it's not a T.Rex cover) & "Me & My Girl (Nightclubbing)".
You can try to knock David Essex but to be fair the bloke has produced some enjoyable pop songs over the years - I'm not a massive fan but just fancied a bit of Dave in my CD collection & this does the job just fine.
As Steve Coogan's character Paul Calf said, "we can't all swan round like we're David Essex" - but you can enjoy some pretty good quality pop performances on this CD (plus one or two dodgy songs from musicals too)
- there's also a cracking "Best Of" Dave collection availbale on Amazon ... Read More:

9.Greatest Hits by: David Essex

Music : Greatest Hits
The early 70s was David Essex’s time as he competed with the likes of David Cassidy, T. Rex and The Osmonds for pole position on the charts. Rock On is a sultry rock number, Gonna Make You A Star has a nice foot tapping tune and Silver Dream Machine is a dreamy ballad from the movie Silver Dream Racer. Lamplight is moody rock just like Rock On whilst Oh What A Circus from 1978 is his lovely version of the song from Evita. To his credit, there’s lots of variety on these tracks, from slow but innovative rock to great pop ballads plus a second version of Rock On. Essex won’t make pop history but his small contribution to the seventies scene in the UK is fondly remembered and this album is highly listenable.
