I love this album, but for me even though I think it contains some of their finest work todate, I can't help but prefer Plans which to me was as near perfect as an album can get! You can tell that the band are moving in a new, exciting direction with this album, and whilst in the main it works, the intro on I will possess your heart for me is just far too long and repetitive. However, there are some to soon become classics such as Grapevine Fires and Your New Twin Sized Bed. I think the lyrics are achingly beautiful, and can be related to by anyone who's experienced love and loss. Death Cab for Cutie still amaze me, even today's bands fail to even compare to the careful hounest lyrics of Ben Gibbard. This Album will blow you away from start to finish. My stand out track on this Album has to be "Your Heart is an Empty Room",belive me it'll tug at your emotions and make you think about your life.

I'm also surprised by the lack of reviews for this remarkable album so thought I have to had my own. The song that got me really 'into' them was The New Year and after hearing I brought the album on here and loved straight away, that track and Expo '86 being the real stand outs at first. Then the all album opened up for me and every song was a classic. Lightness is a ear pleasing and joy of a song, with great vocals and 'oh wha-ho's' aplenty. I skip forward to The Sound Of Settling being the most uplifting song on the album 'Old age is just around the bend and I can't wait to go gray'. This is my fave out of all the ones I have heard. I have Plans and was really dissappointed coz it is nowhere near as good as this. It also happens to be the first Death Cab album i bought. xxx

This CD is comprised of the early Death Cab cassette 'You Can Play These Songs With Chords' and ten extra songs. Much of the original cassette was re-recorded and released again on 'Something About Airplanes', but three of the songs were not. Hindsight is a fairly solid song, but Two Cars and That's Incentive are better, and are excellent. The extra material is more hit and miss. In particular TV Trays is incredibly bad (as Ben Gibbard seems to accept in the sleeve notes), and it's the only Death Cab song I actively dislike, and Flustered/Hey Tomcat! seems pretty pointless and a little self indulgent. I bought Plans - which is a totally amazing album, but have to say The Photo Album is a huge disappointment after hearing Plans. There is one real gem on there, Movie script ending, but the rest of the songs I would have to discribe as bland, background music....not offensive, but all the same boring. I was really hoping after reading the reviews on here, that it would be in the same league as Plans, but I was sadly disappointed.
