Its probably fair to say that this is the one album that sits in just about every self respecting rock fans collection, whether they, like me, were knocking about on its original release, or for younger enthusiasts have bought it for its historical value.
This mk2 version of Purple, benefiting from the addition of Ian Gillan's wonderful vocal range (my daughter calls him 'the voice') and Roger Glover's excellent bass and knowledge of musical arrangements, kicked off with an album that not only became the first example of genuine 'hard rock', but unlike some other bands also allowed the depth of their music to shine through.
While not wishing to be critical of the albums contents, how can you knock the likes of 'child in time', 'hard ... Read More:

Is Great Expectations listening to the same CD as everyone else that has rightly given this CD 5 stars - he is correct in that you had to be there - and I was on many occasions and then later the inferior White Snake & Rainbow -as stated by many this is arguably the best live recording ever made - no contest as far as I'm concerned.- the interplay between Lord & Blackmore - and the pulsating rhythm section is incredible! Others can only aspire!

This is my only Deep Purple album and I absolutley love it's such a good album each song is brilliant from start to finish. This is obviously most famouse for the famous rock riff Smoke On The Water how can you not like that song. The best songs are Highway Star, Picture Of Home, Smoke On The Water & Space Truckin'. Deffinetly a Rock album to buy and deffinetlty should be considerd a classic. DEEP PURPLE ROCK!!!!!!

even though it was stated as new release for 2008 Deep Purple's best of is merely the same compilation that was released ten years ago as i came across it in co-op so don't be fooled by the release date as there is nothing new on this dissappointing best of.

Sandwiched between the fifties-influenced and bluesy "In Rock" and the "heavy rock" classic "Machine Head", "Fireball" is most people's third choice in the magnificent early 70s triptych from Deep Purple. Granted there are not the anthems like "Highway Star", "Child In Time", "Smoke On The Water" or "Speed King" on this collection, but there's still some great hard rock in tracks like "The Mule", the title track, the extended blues rock workouts of "Fools" and "No One Came" and the iconic single "Strange Kind Of Woman". "Anyone's Daughter" is a bizarre trip into country rock that no doubt appalled the band's fans at the time ! However, overall this is an immaculately remastered piece of work, full of trademark Purple drums, driving organ, rumbling bass and cosmic guitar. Oh and ... Read More:

I know people that have never really got in to this, let me tell you if you do like the Purple ones then this is their last real album, again bassist Roger Glover, has done a great job remastering the out-takes I wish this had been a double album when it first came out containing all the CD`s extras, perfect Purple music, just listen to the jam at the end to hear how tight these guys were..

The last of Deep Purple's seventies albums to feature Ritchie Blackmore, this album is an uneven effort. Blackmore himself has never liked the album and stated so at the time of the record's release. When he chooses to apply himself, as on the fiery title track and the ballad 'Soldier of Fortune', the results are excellent. However, he is hardly in evidence at all on other songs and while Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes do their best to rally the troops, they have an uphill struggle on such lacklustre material as 'Love Don't Mean a Thing' and 'Hold On' (the first Purple original to lack a writing credit for Blackmore). Elsewhere, Glenn Hughes' vocal on 'Holy Man' is entertaining and the funk of 'You Can't Do It Right' holds the attention, but as a follow-up to the superb "Burn" album, "Stormbringer" ... Read More:

So the real question was could Deep Purple really hack it. Okay they released 'Perfect Strangers' and it was good, they played at the return of the Knebworth Fair and despite the appalling conditions the show was fantastic. But now comes the difficult second album, just like any new band, the question is can they follow up initial success, with something of equal or better quality or was it just an exercise in topping up the pension fund?

Well no worries on that score this album is sheer unadulterated, classic Deep Purple, great lyrics, good riffs and superb musicianship. Standout track for me is 'Mitzi Dupri' but there are a fist full of great tracks on this album.

I would highly recommend this to any Deep Purple fan and any fan of British classic hard rock music.

I thought i was the only one who had heard of this album, it sounds like the band was going somewhere, good line up, dirty guitars with coverdales blues coming through. I would of liked to see what the next album would sound like, yeh tommy and drugs don't mix but what history was made with this.... propably the most under rated recording in the world
