Jacqui Dankworth has learnt a lot from her illustrious parents. From her father, John, she has learnt which notes to sing, and more importantly, which notes NOT to sing. From her mother, Cleo, she has learnt the balance of hot and cool singing ....sometimes pure, usually...well, more interesting. The album is, perhaps, a little odd. Its a mixture of jazz and A.E.Housman, who's stiff upper lip quivers from time to time. It's difficult to imagine that Dankworth's Houseman is the man so admired by J. Enoch Powell, but his emotionality is brought to life by a mixture of careful, yet passionate singing and sensitive, but gritty, playing. This album is an excellent piece of music - if you like latin or jazz then pick this up. The recording and instrumentation is perfect, the sound is crystal clear - very well mixed and the musicians are fantastic. It contains some of the best melodies i've heard in a long time. There are a few vocal songs with guest singer Maria Ewing and the rest is instrumentals, so theres a nice contrast between the pieces.
