This was the piece of music that first really turned me on to classical music, listening to the very first performance from Coventry Cathedral on a small tranny radio. What I failed to realise then was that this massive impact was achieved by brilliant structural simplicity.

The whole work is effectively a study on the tritone, the 'diabolus in musica', that most disturbing and unstable of intervals. From the bells at the start to the harmonically ambiguous endings of the first and second movements and of the entire work; from the alternating tonics of the boys' Te Decet Hymnus to the alternating tintinnabulations of the soprano's Sanctus; from the fanfares of the Dies Irae to the two halves of the tenor's ineffable Dona Nobis Pacem ... "Tristan Und Isolde" is a huge and powerful score, one that for many is simply "too much" to handle. It has a kind of "black magic" that no other opera has, and it's not an easy score to get a handle on. The music as a whole is, to say the very least, overwhelming. It took me years and years to really "get into it", and I've heard many recordings of it. That said, I find it very much like a narcotic that I must have. Small wonder that Wagner, when writing it, himself said that "this Tristan is driving me mad". Whatever the case, this EMI monophonic recording stands as one of the great recordings of the century, and for good reason. Furtwangler's way with the score is extraordinary. It's as though he sees a supernatural mysticism in the music, ... Read More:

carl orff's carmina burana remains one of my all time favourite pieces of classical music, drawing on many different styles including opera, classic, romantic, baroque (and i always think of spanish folk music in some of the later movements). this recording if anything emphasises its power, emotion and Orff's skill at building up anticipation and tension by use of many different textures of music.
the voices are awesome, in paricular the tenor ( who wails comically and operatically in <>), though the boy's chorus also adds enrichment. others have commented on minor nuances in the recording. i appreciate that they are there, but to take them away or digitally edit them would be to somehow alter the thick atmosphere that veils this ... One of several versions of Fischer-Deskau's recordings of Schubert and Muller's masterpiece, this 1955 recording has been remastered by the Albus Dumbledores of Abbey Road Studios and is definitely worthy of the series' title "Recordings of the Century". Buy this record and marvel. It is perhaps no coincidence that Fischer-Deskau served on the Russian Front during WW2, and that his experiences there might have coloured his interpretation of the "Winter Journey". An epiphany.

All responses to music, recorded or otherwise, are of their nature highly subjective and personal. If you want a Mahler set with emotion overlaid on the music then you should get Bernstein/DGG. This set is in many ways its antithesis.

In a perfect world Symphony 1 would have the short exposition repeat in the first movement. Even without it this performance is one of the most bracing and satisfying that I know.

Symphony 2 is excellent except for the very end of the disc where the engineers limit the volume because of the difficulty of recording this work. Soloists are very fine, however.

Symphony 3 is one of my favourite performances of the work with a bright and clear approach. Movement #1 is particularly noteworthy ... Read More:

This is a very satisfying account of 'Die Zauberflote', principally on account of Bohm's handling of the score. He inspires the Berlin Philharmonic to convey a Masonic 'gravitas' which is in keeping with the philosophy of Enlightenment Reason which lurks behind the pantomime elements of this unusual work. You will certainly find deliberate speeds here, which may not be to your taste if you like fleet, revisionist, original-instrument Mozart. Vocally it's the women in this recording that have had a bad press: but Evelyn Lear has some lovely tones in her voice even if there are occasions when Pamina's music presents her with challenges. If you want perfection in this part, go for Janowitz on the Klemperer recording (but be warned, that has no dialogue). Similarly you may ... Read More:

This is a fantastic recording of a brilliant piece of music. The recording is crisp and clear and worth buying for the first track alone! Fischer-Dieskau made several recordings of this great song cycle, but this one by Deutsche Grammophon is the pick.

Three stars only? For the Solti ring? Surely not? Well yes actually.

How to explain this? Solti's was the second set I brought - largely because it was so famous that I thought that I simply had to have it. The first set I acquired was a ludicrously cheap version of Furtwangler's set from Turin (with Martha Modl, Ludwig Suthaus, Ferdinand Franz et al). I really didn't know anything about the Ring at the time except a few bits that I'd heard over the years. Having it all meant that I could dip in and out and out and gradually, with the help of the ENO guides, I found my way round these astonishing works.

It's very difficult to be objective about Furtwangler. If I had to summarise what is great about him in the Ring it would be that he understands ... Read More:
